Always fabulous Diane von Furstenberg (front row center in white) welcomed new members to the Council of Fashion Designer of America roster. Photo by PatrickMcMullan.com |
The only good thing about this week's heat wave was that it forced me into the cool, dark confines of our local movie theaters for some really hot action. I caught the special Hamptons.com preview of "The Bourne Ultimatum" at the Southampton UA Cinema on Hill Street and was sure glad I did. The lines the next day snaked all the way down to Windmill Lane so it was no surprise to hear the opening weekend broke all box office records for a summer launch, largely thanks to
Matt Damon's hunky "Jason Bourne", truly the thinking girl's action hero. The flick has already put Matt at the top of the bankable A-list stars on Forbes.com! To cap that, he just became the 2343rd celebrity to be honored with a star on the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard.
Jamie Foxx may not have a star on the famed Hollywood Boulevard but, like Matt he does have an Oscar and may be reaching for another with his latest turn in "The Kingdom". You would have thought I'd had enough of exploding cars and blazing pistols, but I had to check out Jamie's turn as a FBI agent looking to kick terrorists' butts in Saudi Arabia.
The overly sympathetic portrayal of our "friends" the Saudis didn't seem to faze the crowd at the bold faced studded screening:
Howard Stern and
Beth Ostrosky,
Caroline Hirsch,
Kelly Bensimon,
Chris and
Cristina Cuomo,
Jeff Zucker and former superstar manager turned house flipper
Sandy Gallin. Also making their first non-jail related appearance in Southampton were
Kathy and
Rick Hilton who have more serious concerns then international relations - like daughter
Paris' new shoe line for Antebi. I'm just thrilled that Paris is getting into community service in such a vital way. This may be the first genuinely good and selfless thing she's done. Shoes for the masses!
If they gave an award for community service in the fashion and beauty biz it would have to go to "Beauty Junkies: Inside Our $15 Billion Obsession with Cosmetic Surgery" author
Alex Kuczynski for looking honestly at our latest national addiction. She tells you everything you need to know - the menu of procedures (right down to labia reconstruction), the price tags, the names of doctors and dentists, the drugs, the implements and implants, the celebrity patients. She also lays out the dangers, the disasters and the deaths. Best of all, she tells this from the point of view of a one-time junkie herself!
Southampton's
Nancy Stone, no stranger to the politics of medicine (her husband is the eminent Dr. Martin Stone former president of The American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology), snared Alex to be the honored guest at the annual Authors Luncheon to benefit Rogers Memorial Library Foundation this week. You can bet that I'll be there to ask that burning question – "To B or not to B, actually to Botox or not to Botox".
Sweeties, last week I told you all about the darling
Rachael Ray and her main man hubby
John Cusimano setting up housekeeping in Southampton. Now Jen's learned of more stars seeking peace and quiet in our little paradise. New parents
Liev Schreiber and
Naomi Watts have been looking quietly for a place on the East End where they can eventually set up a playground for their son,
Alexander Pete.
Christy Turlington and husband, regular Long Island guy actor-director,
Ed Burns are also searching for wide open spaces for their kiddies to romp.
Diane von Furstenberg isn't letting any grass grow under her feet as new president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and has already, as she promised opened up the membership to 30 rising young stars The newest members celebrated their official "arrival" on Monday night at DVF's studio in New York. They faced some pretty stiff competition this year – applications were at an all time high – so the diverse crew had plenty to feel good about. The new crop of talented young designers includes a number of our East End neighbors including
Tory Burch,
Rachel Roy,
Phillip Lim,
Georgina Chapman and partner
Keren Craig,
Victoria Bartlett, and
Adam Lippes.
On another fashion note,
Vera Wang and hubby
Arthur Becker are moving their family from their spacious Park Avenue apartment into an even grander - yet familiar - residence a few blocks away. The fashion designer is ready to sell her 12-room apartment at 778 Park Ave. and move into her late parents' duplex co-op doors away at 740 Park Ave.
Vera's dad,
Cheng Ching Wang, who died last September at age 87, was a pharmaceutical mogul who bankrolled his daughter's bridal-wear business. He bought the sprawling co-op in 1983. In 2005, a year after his wife died, Wang purchased a smaller three-bedroom, three-bath unit at 820 Park Avenue but held onto the gorgeous spread at 740, possibly the best address in New York and home to the likes of
Steve and
Christine Schwarzman.
Changing New York addresses also are
Wilbur and
Hilary Geary Ross who are finalizing the deal to purchase the West 57th Street penthouse that was once home to celebrity chronicler
Earl Blackwell. It had a last asking price of $18.9 million, down from $24 million. The extraordinary property includes a ballroom where Earl once entertained New York and Europe's glitterati. They're buying it from developer
Andrew Farkas who renovated the shabby spread to its Architectural Digest look today. I'm getting out my new Lanvin ballet slippers to hit the dance floor.
Paris Hilton's little brother
Barron Hilton has been popping up at a number of Hamptons' nightclubs including Dune and Stereo by the Shore. Uhh, isn't he only 17? What's up with this? This is particularly odd when the local cops have pulled off a number of stings at places like The Drivers Seat and arrested bartenders, who believing door security had vetted the clubkids, and charged them with serving undercover minors. Seems like we have two sets of rules here.
Just as we got to know and really appreciate the paintings of legendary artist
Liz Gribin she upped and moved from Bridgehampton to a penthouse studio in Boston. But good news! Liz has been selected by art conscious retailer Banana Republic as one of the 500 contemporary American artists to be featured with major displays of their works in the mega retailers gazillion stores around the country beginning August 14th. Named along with
Larry Rivers a "Living Legend" by the Hamptons Library, Liz will see her works blown up to wall size! Three Cheers for Liz!!
Three more cheers for local film makers the
Ben and
Orson Cummings, who after their well received debut at last year's Hamptons International Film Festival placed their film "If I Didn't Care" in theaters in Sag Harbor and the East Village. The sexy who-dunit stars
Roy Scheider and played to a packed house this weekend. Support our budding film community and help the boys extend the reach of this really smart thriller set in our towns.
Big bauble jeweler
Jeffrey Rackover hosted a major bash at his Water Mill spread for an unusually diverse mix of Hamptonites and visitors not often seen in these parts. Sirius Satellite Radio CEO
Mel Karmazin, CBS CEO and president
Les Moonves and wife the gorgeous
Julie Chen who co-hosts The Early Show, and
Senator Frank Lautenberg were among the crowd of visitors to the East End who were not politicking. Carrying the flag for the local community were
Lorraine Bracco and daughter
Stella Keitel,
Jane and
Joe Pontarelli,
Alan Grubman,
The Scotto Family – Theresa, Elena and Elaina,
Lisa Gastineau, and funny lady
Susie Essman. Just in case you were thinking it, no,
Howard Stern was not there given his legal wranglings with both media titans.
Tony winner
Joe Stein has put more smiles on theatergoers faces over the last four decades then any other book writer we know. This weekend, The Playwrights Theatre of East Hampton is presenting a staged reading of his enormously funny, "Enter Laughing" based on the autobiography of comedy genius
Carl Reiner. Award winning actor and director
Lewis J. Stadlen helms and incredible cast that includes
Cady Huffman,
Jerry Adler,
Peter Stadlen,
Audrey Lynn Weston, our favorite redhead
Kate Mueth and Hamptons golden couple,
Eli Wallach and his missus
Anne Jackson. Joe who among other things penned the book for "Fiddler on the Roof" will do an audience Q & A following the reading, then its party time at the East Hampton Studios!
Seen Around the Villages
What with the Bill and Hill juggernaut, Team Giuliani hot on their heels, polo and a bevy of big bashes, the villages have been swarmed with major eye candy for the celebrity ogler. Here's a quick rundown on where they ate, shopped and hung out - well maybe not so quick given the mega voltage lighting up the East End this past weekend.
Proving serious shopping is not just the turf of the female set, the new
John Varvatos store has been packing in the guys lured by John's edgy, sophisticated rock star fashions.
Jon Bon Jovi,
Richie Sambora, and Nascar's
Jeff Gordon have all been spending some real $$$ on such items as Varvatos' hip calf skin bomber jackets.
Not to be outdone Russian billionaires
Anna Anisimova and sister
Angelina - with major security in tow – shopped the diamond counters of estate jewelers Hollis, Reh & Shariff on Jobs Lane.
Even famous people have to eat…and eat well! No surprise that our local dining spots often resembled a casting call.
Michael J. Fox with wife
Tracy Pollan made the scene at Almondito as did football great turned TV personality the ever smiling and polite
Tiki Barber.
Hillary Clinton's right hand lady
Huma Abedin took the Hillary for President staff over to Almondito after the campaign benefit at
Ron Perelman's estate The Creeks just across the street. The democratic crew blew off some steam from the party packed weekend by noshing on guacamole, tacos, enchiladas and plenty of margaritas! They even topped off their outing with some good ole fashioned karaoke!
In town for
Mercedes-Benz Polo,
Brooke Shields with her husband and two kids and friends dined at the new Italian trattoria, Matto on Sunday night. The large group sat inside at the large table in the center of the dining room sampling pizzas, pastas, salads. The family also showed up at kid friendly
Rowdy Hall for lunch.
Kim Cattrall and
Donna Summers added to the star scene at The Laundry.
Michael Lohan dined solo at The Drivers Seat.
George Stephanopoulos took his little girls to Candy Kitchen for breakfast.
Billy Joel was seen prior to his performance at the Ross School at Tutto Italiano where he purchased some groceries and brick-oven pizza. The Simmons brothers,
Russell and
Reverend Run, also seen popped in to Tutto Italiano over the weekend. They sure do love that pizza!
More Italian food fans -
Tommy Mottola and wife
Thalia dined with her family at Della Femina Following the meal, the Mottolas asked to speak with
Chef Michael Rozzi, whom they showered with compliments.
Philip Seymour Hoffman and
Cynthia Rowley celebrated dual birthdays at Fresno in East Hampton.
Roll call at Nick & Toni's this week:
Eric Fischl,
Patrick Demarchelier with
Peter Brant,
Brooke Shields and her husband and
Natalie Cole. Sunday was big with
Gwyneth Paltrow,
Kate Capshaw dining with friends,
John "Jellybean" Benitez with his wife,
David Yurman,
Itzhak Perlman sharing a table with
Alan Alda, Director
Gene Saks and writer
Hanna Pakula,
Larry Gagosian with
Ron Delsener, and
Heather Mills McCartney with a pal.
Not all the fine dining was in the restaurants, a number of our top catering companies were turning out sumptuous meals for the discerning crowds.
Andrea Correale of Elegant Affairs had a busy weekend. First she catered
Natalie Cole's party at the W Hotel's Hampton Hideaway before the songstress headed to Pink Elephant to continue the celebration. On Saturday, Elegant Affairs catered an intimate dinner hosted by
Brooke Shields with her "Lipstick Jungle" co-star
Kim Raver and 20 friends who came to a private East Hampton home to mark Shields hosting Bridgehampton Polo. The dinner was a food lover's dream complete with grilled Pacific Rim skirt steak, pesto crusted chicken over a bed of panzanella salad, chopped shrimp salad, Tuscan smashed potatoes and almond scented biscotti stuffed peaches - Yum!
The Clinton's favorite Hamptons BBQ joint
Turtle Crossing was flipping lots of pancakes at the pancake breakfast at the
Patricof's house which was a fundraiser for the
Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. In fact, even a few democratic celebrity supporters flipped some pancakes.
Chevy Chase,
Russell Simmons, and
Alec Baldwin were spotted with spatulas.
