Let's hear it for the girls!
Don't you just love it when you hear the news of a sister scoring a big deal? If like me you cheer, then I've got some Scent-sational dish on some of our gal pals - Sarah Jessica, Tory, Gwen, Donna and more – that'll make you shout Hooray!
First up is our Amagansett neighbor and Sex in the City star
Sarah Jessica Parker. You will be thrilled to hear SJP launching a follow up scent to her wildly successful perfume Lovely, launched in 2005 and still on the top of the celeb fragrance list. As sweet and well behaved as Lovely was, Miss Scent in the City is taking a sharp turn with the summer debut of Covet which Sarah Jessica says is the opposite side of the same woman.
Only this woman's gotta have it...and she wants it now.
The first commercial shows SJP clad in a billowing LaCroix ballgown. She spots a bottle of the fragrance in the window of a luxe Paris boutique. Rather then wait until the store is open the next day, she smashes the window with her stiletto – Laboutin no doubt – snatches her prize and is almost immediately arrested by the gendarmes. Screaming "I had to have it", she's tossed into a cell with assorted hookers and trannies. A scream!!
No joke is the $30,000,000 the fragrance is predicted to bring in – the first year. Macy's has the exclusive for the first two months in July and August before the national roll out so mark that down and don't say I didn't warn you if the shelves are cleaned out in days.
BB (that's short hand for blonde bombshell)
Gwen Stefani who, when not on the road with her band can be usually found at La Casa Lieberman in Southampton with her BFF and design partner Andrea Lieberman, is adding another notch to her growing fashion empire that started with L.A.M.B. and is still growing by leaps and bounds. Now with a business that has scored $100,000,000 in sales, the platinum tressed rock and fashion goddess (when last I looked) is plunging into the gazillion dollar fragrance biz with the introduction of " L" in September.
Why L ? It's the first letter in L.A.M.B. and for Gwen stands for love of her baby Kingston Rossdale whom many locals were able to peek at when Gwen was last out east this fall. Cute, don't ya think? When you hit the perfume counter, I promise you won't miss it – Rasta red, yellow and green packaging with a cheetah. Inside on the black and white background are emblazoned the words " I want you all over me". Hot – also a line from her hit song Crash.
I would be grossly in-scent-sitive if I overlooked telling you about DK as in Donna Karan who will receive yet another award but this time for something that has truly touched a personal chord with the internationally acclaimed designer. Donna will be presented with the Fragrance Foundation's Hall of Fame Award at their annual FiFi celebration in May.
When notified, Donna sent out a statement that ran, " I'm particularly honored to accept this award on behalf of the amazing collaboration I had with my husband Stephan (Weiss) who founded our beauty business. To us beauty was more than a fragrance. It was our passion that went on to touch so many lives". Fashion insiders know that her late husband Stephan, a renowned artist and sculptor in his own right, put aside his own work to helm Donna's then fledgling beauty biz working side by side, creating eye-catching, innovative products with gloriously designed packaging. The very first lines were all designed by him and even since his death in 2001 (which left Donna heart-broken) the company still relies on his original concepts. You can bet that the May 21 fete will be a bittersweet evening for Donna who I am sure would give anything to have Stephan by her side on the stage.
Though socialite turned designer
Tory Burch didn't work for DK, she did spend time in the trenches with Donna's Seventh Avenue pals and East End neighbors
Ralph Lauren and
Vera Wang and may have taken more than a page out of Donna's blueprint for success.
In just a few, and I mean few, years Tory, the one time wife of wildly successful venture capitalist Chris Burch, mother of three sons and step-mother of three daughters, a fixture at the Fashion Week shows and all around lady who lunches made the leap from the social merry-go-round to legitimate fashion designer. Her eponymous label is now on everything from evening gowns to handbags to sportswear in the best stores around the world.
Now there is great news for her many Hamptons' friends and fans. Tory is set to open a new jewel of a shop at 47 Newtown Lane, East Hampton in mid-May. No socialite vanity project for this hard working designer just a marvelous showcase for her preppy bohemian luxe designs in a bold color palette.
Her show for Spring 2007 simply blew everyone away, especially her mod mini evening looks adding black and white to her color scheme for the first time. Fun, glam and sexy clothes for every woman of every age. Sort of Grace Kelly meets Edie Sedgwick. You don't believe moi? Both teen heart throb size 0 Hilary Duff and the voluptuous and somewhat more mature Catherine Zeta Jones wore Tory's silver sequined mini dress to Hollywood parties and they both looked smashing with Catherine even drawing wolf whistles when hubby
Michael Douglas was out of range.
Meanwhile the very single, available and still friends with ex, Chris, Ms. Burch has been linked to Ronald Perelman and most recently to Grand Tour cyclist Lance Armstrong (come to think of it Tory does bear a resemblance to
Sheryl Crow) with whom she has been spotted canoodling on both coasts.
My West Coast spies are all a twitter with the news that powerhouse producer Harvey Weinstein has not only obtained the rights to produce on film yet another smash, long running Broadway musical, Nine, but he's already brought the sensational director
Rob Marshall on board as well. Rob you might remember helmed the Oscar sweeping Chicago just a few years ago and clearly Harvey is hoping that lightening can strike twice.
But since this column wants to talk about successful women, let's take a look at the super talented, high priced ladies Harvey has on his wish list starting with East Hampton's Renee Zellweger. No secret that the blonde haired Texan who has carted home numerous Oscars, Golden Globes and more doesn't come cheap. Last I heard $15,000,000 per picture.
Hardly cheap talent are the other glamorous gals he has in mind for Mario Fratti's musical adaptation of Fellini's 8 ½ -
Gwyneth Paltrow,
Nicole Kidman,
Anne Hathaway, Catherine Zeta Jones and
Dame Judi Dench. What a set of divas - in the best sense, of course. The story focuses on the fictional film director Guido Contini dealing with all the pressure from the many women in his life. Raul Julia created the Guido role and
Antonio Banderas added his own sexy stamp to the part in the 2003 revival on Broadway.
Word is that Antonio has Rob and Harvey's eye but they are also said to be talking with
Javier Bardem,
George Clooney and Johnny Depp. My personal choice is Johnny. Who else could balance all these powerhouse ladies without blowing it? Whoever plays Guido is not as important as which of these ladies will grab some of the juiciest roles in decades. Wish you all well!
