Darlings this has been a hard week on both my tootsies and my waistline with an onslaught of fabulous fetes that I just could not miss. Remind me never to start the week with a party that has any mention of the words chef or gourmet at the top of the invitation. That's a danger sign that I now will watch out for, before I so quickly say, "But of course, I'll be there".
Such was the mistake, albeit an extraordinary experience, when my BFF told me that
Joe Realmuto, the cute chef at Nick & Toni's, was cooking at a benefit for the Hayground School in Soho at the super hot Lure Fishbar. Never missing a chance to trade pasta tips with my favorite East End kitchen man I hustled down.
Little did I know that it was not only Joe but a dozen other super star chefs, each cooking a specialty - for course, after course, after course. Not wanting to appear critical of any of the offerings I just had to have a little taste of everything. My good manners got the best of me and the next day when I tried to squeeze into the size 6 little black dress, designed by no less than
Madonna, and for which I've had fought tooth and nail to snatch up at H&M, no go. Truth is I'm a size 8 and had no business buying it in the first place. I'll just put it up on eBay tomorrow – as I told you everyone else would.
Fortunately I had a side-split number from Proenza-Schouler to slip into for the major Broadway opening of
John Kander and
Fred Ebb's new musical comedy, "Curtains". Good thing, as I realized on the red carpet I was up against some serious competition from such Hamptons neighbors as
Sarah Jessica Parker with her dreamy hubby
Mathew Broderick, followed by
Kelly Ripa looking so sexy her hubby
Mark Consuelos didn't even give me a passing look.
At the opening night party at Tavern at the Green I refrained from all the tempting tid-bits being passed and spent the time chatting with the likes of
Mary Louise Parker,
Danny DeVito and his equally funny wife
Rhea Perlman,
Tyne Daley,
Jane Krakowski, the outrageous
Mario Cantone,
Dina Merrill and
Ted Hartley,
Jimmy and
Margo Nederlander, and the very charming star of the show
David Hyde Pierce. Saw the always smashingly dressed
Amy Fine Collins with her husband
Bradley and daughter
Flora, who seems to have inherited mom's glamour gene. I wondered how I could knock off Amy's look, then I stopped in my tracks. The gorgeous
Noah Racey, star of more shows than I can remember and whom I have met briefly at the Career Transition for Dancers Gala last fall, came over with a "Hey Jennifer – How ya doin'? You look swell". Red carpet glory at its best!
As if this wasn't enough to make any girls heart race, there was an invitation to come to church for dinner from a pal, and they weren't talking a pancake supper, but
Elton John's sweet 60th Birthday Party at none other than the Cathedral of St. John the Divine! Interview Magazine's
Ingrid Sischy and
Sandy Brant hosted an over the top tribute to the Rocket Man who arrived with his hubby David Furnish and their prized pooch Arthur.
The guest list was not just eclectic but a true reflection of Elton's phone book. Not sitting at pews but flower bedecked tables were the likes of
Robin Williams,
Fran Drescher,
Carie Lowell and husband
Richard Gere,
Yoko Ono,
Brandy,
kd Lang,
Elizabeth Hurley and new spouse
Arun Nayar,
Barbara Walters,
Rosie O'Donnell,
Emma Thompson,
Pierce Brosnan and his beautiful wife
Kiely Shaye Smith,
Bette Midler and
Martin Von Haselberg,
Sir Michael Caine and his wife
Shakira,
Diane Sawyer,
Brian Wilson,
Kid Rock, the Proenza-Schouler boys
Jack McCollough and
Lazaro Hernandez,
Chuck Close and about 400 more. Talk about a hot list!
