Sag Harbor - The Flying Point Foundation For Autism Benefit Concert is set for Friday, April 2, World Autism Day, at Bay Street in Sag Harbor.
One of the world's most gifted pianists,
Brittany Maier will perform, and the event will benefit the Flying Point Foundation for Autism, based here on the East End.
The program will also include the debut performance of a song written especially for the foundation, "We'll Find a Way to Fly Straight Back Home," sung by recent "American Idol" audition finalist
Leah Laurenti of Medford.
Born four months prematurely and later diagnosed as blind and autistic, 20-year-old Maier of Long Island was soon recognized as a savant. At age six, after receiving a toy piano, she played a flawless rendition of "Ave Maria." Her rare gift quickly became evident, and her parents arranged for formal music instruction. Maier released her first album, "20/20," when she was just 12.
In 2005, Maier was featured on "Dateline NBC," followed by an appearance on CNN's "
Paula Zahn – Now!" That year, an article in the
New York Daily News proclaimed: "Brittany is a brilliant testimony to God's gracious, miraculous presence among us," citing her as "perhaps the leading female musical savant in the world." Her astounding performance brought invitations to appear on the "
Montel Williams Show" and at Shea Stadium for a 9/11 memorial before a crowd of 55,000. She released a second CD in 2006. Since 2007, Maier has traveled worldwide, touching the lives of millions. She speaks and performs for school-age children, college students and adults.
"We are thrilled to have Brittany perform for us on World Autism Day," said
Kim Covell, founder of the Flying Point Foundation for Autism. "Her talent epitomizes the title of this concert, "The Awe in Autism;" she will surely leave the audience in awe."
The Flying Point Foundation for Autism is an East End not-for-profit whose mission is to enrich the lives of children with autism through opportunity and understanding.
Tickets to the event are $50, with a limited number of VIP tickets available for $100. VIP tickets include a wine reception after the show. To purchase tickets, call the Bay Street Theatre box office at 631-725-9500 or online at www.baystreet.org.
