Bright sunshine and a park make for the perfect outing at the Greenport Village ice rink. (Nicole B. Brewer)

Need a break from the quiet North Fork nights this winter? Not feeling a drive to the slopes? Kids driving you nuts? Head over to the open air ice rink at Mitchell Park in Greenport Village for a little ice skating and let them get over their cabin fever while you enjoy a quaint Mid-Atlantic fishing village. The waterside views coupled with the many entertainments, carousel, eateries like Claudio's and BBQ Bill's, and shops make this tiny spot on the North Fork a great winter retreat for families and folks who enjoy frosty fun.

If its been a while since you've laced up a pair of ice skates don't worry about looking like hockey icon Wayne Gretzky or U.S. Olympic figure skating medalist Sarah Hughes as the hundreds who flock to this icy enclave are all a little wobbly this time of year. The exception of course are those who are part of the Greenport Pirates Hockey teams who zip and zag across the ice with skill and prescision. Teams for youth starting at age eight through 16 and adults starting at age 16 are full right now but you can still jump into a pick up game for a small fee. Check the schedule at GreenportHockey.com for details.

Go early in the weekend if you are a beginner as the ice is not as packed as in the afternoon. However, beware of the little ones with skate assist bars. Skating under the stars is a great date night and is often packed with teens trying to look cool. Family night brings out all of the locals, young and not-so-young, who spend a few hours gliding across the ice then strolling through the Village enjoying hot chocolate and coffee nearby.

The Greenport Village ice rink is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m to 5 p.m. (admission is $5 for adults and $3 for kids under 18 and seniors, skate rental is $5), and on weekends and holidays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (admission is $10 for adults and $7 for kids under 18 and seniors, $5 skate rental). Make ice skating a family event on Friday nights where $7 gets you on the ice and includes skate rentals from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. If you want to look like a pro book a private beginners lesson for just $15. Private rink rentals, birthday parties, and season passes are available.
