12th Annual John May Mile & 5K To Provide Vital Funding For The Greenport Fire Department

Julia Braat

On Saturday, May 13, Peconic Landing is presenting the 12th annual John May Mile & 5K. The race will step off from Brecknock Hall at 10 a.m. and all are welcome to participate. All proceeds from the John May Mile & 5K will support the Greenport Fire Department.

"This annual fundraiser is greatly appreciated, and we use it to purchase different types of equipment that are outside of our budget," explained Chief Wayne Miller of the Greenport Fire Department.

The race, which has been dubbed the East End's premier Older Americans Month event, is open to runners and walkers of all fitness abilities and ages. Depending on which they're more comfortable with, the day offers a relaxed mile-long walk or a more challenging 3.1 miles run.

Over the last 12 years, the benefit has raised over $200,000 for the Greenport Fire Department. Last year was a tremendous success, bringing in over $25,000. With the funding, the Fire Department was able to purchase, refurbish, and maintain rescue equipment. Every bit helps with keeping all their gear up-to-date.

"Last year we put the proceeds towards a Lucas CPR device and a Gator with a Med-bed in the back, providing for easy access to tight spaces during events like the Maritime Festival," noted Miller. "These types of equipment are critical to the department, and they really do make a difference when someone is in need."

The 2017 event will mark the debut of a new free Kid Fun Zone with Zumba instruction and relays for the family. A Zen Zone will also be available for those wishing to relax and practice yoga. Instruction is provided by Peconic Landing's team of personal trainers. Mini massages are offered for exhausted runners, a nice incentive to participate!

Following the run/walk, there will be an award ceremony with live music and delicious barbecue food at 11:15 a.m. on the lawn. Local business will be offering their products and gift certificates.

Additionally, Peconic Landing will honor the Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary with the Older Americans Champion Award during the post race celebration.

"The ladies and gentlemen of the Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary have been improving the lives of seniors for some 112 years, and we feel that is something to be celebrated," said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. "For our 12th annual run, it is fitting that we honor such an amazing organization."

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Brecknock Hall. The entry fee for pre-registers is $20 ($15 for students), and $25 on the day of.

Brecknock Hall is located at 1500 Brecknock Road in Greenport. For more information, visit peconiclanding.com.

Hampton Luxury Liner
Hampton Luxury Liner was started in 2000 as a more luxurious way to travel from NYC to the Hamptons and back. The clientele quickly grew and over the years Hampton Luxury liner became the preferred method of transportation to the Hamptons and NYC for many living in NYC and the Hamptons that wanted a comfortable and affordable way to travel back and forth. In 2009, HLL was taken over by Classic Coach and things with the liner didnít change to much for years and the owner there changed the buses to Prevost as opposed to Mercedes Setra Top Class Coaches that have always been a signature of the liner.
