On Thursday, August 18th, LeadingAge President and CEO James W. Clyne, Jr. presented the award for Innovation of the Year to Peconic Landing and East End Arts' Music by the Bedside, a program set to provide musical comfort to the retirement community.
"This award recognizes organizations who are doing something different, something innovative and new that others can replicate," said Clyne in his speech. "This year the awards committee selected Music by the Bedside as the 2016 Innovation of the Year Award recipient."
During the Music by the Bedside program, the many seasoned musicians of East End Arts take on the role of caregiver to provide entertainment and healing through that entertainment. The program is designed to be a one-on-one live performance for seniors in the retirement community's adept nursing center, The Shores at Peconic Landing, as well as a supplement to the center's palliative care techniques.
"Here at Peconic Landing, we've often found that through collaboration, true innovation is born," said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. "This program would not be possible without our friends and partners at East End Arts."
The unusual partnership between the two organizations has forged an innovation that very well may act as a pioneering program for other retirement and nursing centers. Though designed for the benefit of the seniors, the program has proved to be mutually beneficial. Beginning in October of 2015, the program has already shown a significant impact on patients and musicians alike.
"This is what I would call a win-win. It continues to be a tremendous experience for everyone involved," said Gregory J. Garrett, Peconic Landing's EVP and Administrator of Health Services. "I want to thank East End Arts for their interest in the program and for making a difference in the lives of our members."
