After reviewing a number of applications, East End Arts chose the following seven high school students to participate, out of a pool of students from all 17 regional school districts:

 • India Hemby, Alto; Bridgehampton High School, Grade 10
 • Jennah Hoschstedler, Soprano; Bridgehampton High School, Grade 10
 • Justin Mancini, Tenor; Riverhead High School, Grade 12
 • Kaela Murphy, Soprano; Westhampton Beach High School, Grade 10
 • Fred Nydegger, Bass and Tenor; Hampton Bays High School, Grade 11
 • Stephen Peppaceno, Tenor; Riverhead High School, Grade 12
 • Olivia Grace Vayer, Soprano; Mattituck High School, Grade 10

This full scholarship fellowship program allows the seven selected students to participate in an ensemble of talent, under the guidance of a music industry professional. The 2012 Music Masters Fellowship will be mentored by Kinhan (New York Voices, MOSS, JaLaLa). Participating students will be given training in professional rehearsal and performance skills, in addition to preparation for music composition, songwriting and studio recording. They will leave with a portfolio of audio/video materials to assist them in their future endeavors. Kinhan will conduct a vocal jazz choir using repertoire from the New York Voices book, as well as arrangements from her own songbook and other composers' works.

The selected students will be put through the paces of what it takes to bring notes on a page to life in a choral setting. They will learn three to four pieces of music that will cover a broad range of musical styles (i.e., swing, samba/bossa nova, contemporary, gospel, blues) and learn how to workshop the writing and take it to performance ready. All aspects of nuance will be touched upon on how to bring a song to life. There will be group consciousness taught as well as how to step out and be a solo singer when called for in the arrangement. Kinhan will provide and insist on a kind and nurture based environment with an emphasis on individual work done outside of class so that time together is productive, instructive and fun! The songs will be performed in a few public settings, fostering the musician's work ethic, and building an individual and collective confidence among the students.

Performance venues will be chosen for maximum exposure and meaningful connections. The 2012 Fellowship is scheduled to perform at the following events:

 • Winterfest Jazz on the Vine Festival performance with Lauren Kinhan, North Fork, Sunday, March 11, at 4 p.m. at Bedell Cellars

 • East End Arts' Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival in Riverhead, Sunday, May 27

 • East End Arts' Teeny Awards: early June

 • Stay tuned for updates to the performance schedule.

The 2012 Music Masters Fellowship, a full scholarship program, is sponsored by grants from New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and SESAC, a performing rights organization.
