HAITI: Do Not Wait For A Summer Celebrity Fundraiser!

Local and regional businesses and individuals rally to add victims of the earthquake in Haiti. (OxFam International)

Southampton - This is not a news story about the horrific events unfolding in the wake of the natural disaster that has struck one of the poorest nations on earth, a nation with no infrastructure to address this horror, but an acknowledgment of the people and local and regional businesses that are banding together to offer humanitarian efforts. Below is a short recap of events now known as of this writing. Continue to check Hamptons.com for updates.

We have no doubt that come this summer there will be many "Aid for Haiti" fundraisers which will reflect the indomitable altruistic nature of the Hamptons. Right now, however, we at Hamptons.com will undertake to keep our readers informed as to the efforts undertaken both regionally and locally to assist the victims.

Edeyo
Edeyo was founded by Unik Ernst - owner of Lily Pond in East Hampton, and to make contributions to Haitian victims go to www.edeyo.org.

Long Island Green
"LI Green is working with the Bethpage Federal Credit Union to help raise money and materials to help with the Haitian Relief effort. Bethpage is an organization whose guiding principles is "People Helping People" and if there was ever a time where help is desperately needed it is in this tragedy. Bethpage Federal Credit Union has offered assistance by accepting monetary donations from anyone (members and non-members) at all branches, who would like to make a donation to the Haiti Quake Relief efforts. All donations will be sent to the Red Cross.

Help For Orphans International
Help For Orphans International is supporting several orphanages in Jacmel, Haiti right now. They have a plane there and keep transporting food and medical supplies from the Dominican Republic. The organization has been providing food, water, baby formula, bandages, etc. The thing with donating to HFOI is that we have no overhead or exec salaries to pay. So all of the money goes directly to the children and people in need." Any organization that which to align with Orphans International, which is a 501(c)(3) charity so all donations are 100 percent tax deductible, and go to www.helpfororphans.org. Jonathan Glynn of Sag Harbor who will be flying morphine and other medical supplies from the Dominican Republic to Jacmel Haiti.

The Caring House Project Foundation (CHPF)
Frank McKinney and his non-profit organization CHPF don't just build villages for the people of Haiti they restore their dignity by providing the means to become self-sustaining. McKinney, a bestselling author, real-estate entrepreneur and well-recognized for the multi-million dollar real-estate masterpieces he creates, makes very generous, personal contributions from the sale of his books and mansions to this worthy cause. When all non-military flights were being denied access into Port-au-Prince, McKinney and his team of doctors, paramedics, firefighters and other specifically-trained search and rescue team members, persevered until they got clearance to land, becoming one of the first U.S. Emergency Relief Team to arrive on the scene. Singlehandedly McKinney and his team rescued four people buried under collapsed buildings, accounting for 10 percent of the 43 rescues made within the first 100 hours. McKinney's team is proving resourcefully relentless in obtaining whatever supplies are needed, but they desperately need your help if they are to provide relief and rebuild villages. McKinney and his organization are appealing for Americans to give whatever they can to the people of Haiti who are dealing with unimaginable losses. VFW Joins In Haiti Humanitarian Effort
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is assisting in humanitarian efforts in Haiti by providing U.S. service members - with relatives currently located in Haiti - with the funds necessary to purchase airline tickets to the devastated island, so that they may locate, assist or make burial arrangements for relatives affected by the recent earthquake. Funds also may be used to help provide sustenance or other necessities to sustain life. The veterans' organization donation will be used to assist U.S. service members currently on active duty, in the Reserves or in National Guard units. VFW National Commander Tommy J. Tradewell, Sr., has asked VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary members to come to the aid of victims of the recent natural disaster by individually donating what they can to the VFW National Military Services program (NMS), either text VFW to 90999 - standard text messaging rates apply, mail directly to VFW National Military Services, 406 W. 34th Street, Kansas City, MO 64111, or go to www.vfw.org. In addition, he is asking the 7,000 VFW Posts and Auxiliary Units worldwide to donate to the NMS fund to help in this effort.

Suffolk County Community College
Suffolk County Community College has announced a series of activities in response to the devastating earthquakes in Haiti, including on the Ammerman Campus in Selden, proceeds from the College's Spring Benefit Concerts scheduled for Thursday, May 6, and Friday, May 7, at 7 p.m. will benefit the Haitian relief effort. Broadway Stars Help World Vision's Haiti Relief
At a time of unprecedented outreach by the entertainment community to support Haiti, more and more stars are coming up with unique ways to raise funds to help children and families receive life's necessities and start rebuilding after the catastrophic earthquake. Actress Kerry Butler, currently starring in the Broadway show, "Rock of Ages," is auctioning off a backstage tour to benefit World Vision's relief work in Haiti. Other actors are involved in backstage tours auctions to benefit World Vision as well, including James Carpinello, Lauren Molina and Mitch Jarvis. "We're very excited about this auction package we've been offering for the past week, which will include a drink with James Carpinello and me at Glass House afterward," said Butler. "We hope this will encourage others to look at their spheres of influence and think about what else they can do for Haiti. A lot has been given by the public, but so much more is needed for the long-term recovery." With more than 30 years experience in relief and development in Haiti and pre-positioned goods for disasters, World Vision began distributing emergency supplies immediately after the catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti. World Vision has 800 Haitian staff on the ground and the organization's international logistics and disaster response experts were rapidly deployed after the devastating quake. World Vision is launching emergency programs not only in Port-au-Prince, but also in rural areas, and remains committed to long-term sustainability for the communities in which it serves. Haitian Earthquake Family Resource Center Communications and Outreach Committee
Governor David A. Paterson has named members of the Haitian Earthquake Family Resource Center Communications and Outreach Committee, which will be chaired by New York City Councilman Dr. Mathieu Eugene. Governor Paterson and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg opened the Haitian Earthquake Family Resource Center in the wake of the historic earthquake which struck Haiti last month. At the opening of the Center, the Governor also announced the creation of the Center's Communications and Outreach Committee.

"Supporting the Haitian community during this difficult time is the least we can do as our nation, and the entire world, work to rebuild Haiti and assist its people," Governor Paterson said. "This Committee, led by New York City's first Haitian-born elected City Councilman, will work within New York's Haitian community to get the message out that our City and State stand ready to assist with their needs as the crisis in Haiti continues to evolve." The Haitian Earthquake Family Resource Center Communications and Outreach Committee will work to ensure strong communication of the Center's information and mission to the community; will raise awareness throughout the State about the Center and its services; will foster dialogue between community leaders and the Center; and will relay constituent interests and concerns to the Center as it grows to meet evolving needs of the community.

More than 375 people have visited the Center since it opened, receiving reliable information about the status of pending immigration applications, locations of Temporary Protected Status clinics, referrals for State and City services, counseling and interpretation services, and assistance with family locator services. The Center, located at the New York National Guard Armory at 1579 Bedford Avenue, is currently open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays (subject to change based on need), and provides a number of services to the Haitian community, including:

Child Development Center Of The Hamptons
On Friday, March 19 the CDCH Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) will hold it's Hope For Haiti: Family Bingo Night to benefit the School at Mission Reach Out Haiti (MROH). Over 900 attend the School at MROH and funds being raised at CDCH will help rebuild the school devastated in the January 12 earthquake. MROH was founded by Pastor Donald Havrilla of Southampton Full Gospel Church and his wife Eileen in 1982. Friday's benefit opens at 6:30 p.m. for a pizza and hot dog dinner with Bingo beginning at 7 p.m. Pastor Havrilla will be in attendance and will make a brief, first-hand presentation. This event is open to the public. Bingo cards are $1 each and there will also be a 50/50 raffle and prizes for the Bingo winners. General donations are welcome. All proceeds will benefit MROH. Students at CDCH have been collecting change at home each evening and bringing it to school to donate to the Haitian school. It is estimated the children have raised $500 to date and the PTO hopes to meet or exceed the children's fundraising efforts on Friday night.
