Ross School Senior Projects Presents: 'Expressive Voices'

Raising Money And Awareness For ZimKids Through Music And Performance

East Hampton - Ross School is pleased to present Alaya Brown's Senior Project, "Expressive Voices," a fundraiser that will be held on Wednesday, November 18 at the Ross School Senior Building from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This event will raise money for ZimKids, an organization that supports orphans and vulnerable families in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. A portion of the proceeds will go to Ross School programs and scholarships.

"Expressive Voices" will be an extraordinary night of songs, skits and dance, all performed by children from the Bridgehampton community. Refreshments will be served.

"I decided to incorporate two of the things I am most passionate about, children and music," Brown said, "I am calling my event "Expressive Voices" because every child in my Senior Project has been able to open up about their talent and show it in a positive way, a way that is both helping themselves and people living miles away."

ZimKids was created by Brown's outside consultant, Dennis Gadboury. In 2005, Gadboury discovered a community of children, ranging in age from 18 months to 17 years old, who were orphaned by AIDS and other illnesses in one of the poorest areas of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He was in awe of their imagination and spirit. Children were playing with wire toys and dolls that they had made from discarded buttons, scraps of cloth, pieces of wire and more. He was so impressed by their enthusiasm that he decided to find a way to sell the dolls in the U.S. to raise money for the kids.

Each doll comes with a short biography and photo of the child who crafted it. The purchasers have the opportunity to write notes back, which Gadboury hand delivers. Finally, the ZimKids are asked to write thank you notes in return that are sent with photos of them holding the buyers' messages.

Dolls will be available for purchase after the performance. Admission is $20 per person; for $30 a guest will receive a handmade ZimKids doll.

For reservations, call 631-907-5191. For more information, email Brown at albrown10@ross.org. Visit www.zimkids.com for more information about the organization.

The Senior Project is the culmination of a student's learning experience at Ross. Students embody their passions through a process and product that integrates such Ross School principles as multiple intelligences, cultural and historical context, personal reflection, application of technology and pursuit of excellence.
