Southampton - For the third year in a row, the Ovarian Center Research Fund (OCRF) presented
Southampton Hospital with a check representing a portion of the proceeds from their signature '
Super Saturday' event, which was held on August 1 in Water Mill. The donation, which was facilitated by Southampton's Town Clerk, Sundy Schermeyer, is a requirement of the Town's special event regulations.
According to Schermeyer, "We require fundraising events taking place in Southampton Town to support a local non-profit organization. OCRF chose Southampton Hospital's
Ellen Hermanson Breast Center - in particular, the genetic counseling."
Last year, Southampton Hospital recruited Emily Smith, a genetic counselor to develop cancer counseling through genetic testing for ovarian and breast cancer (BRCA 1 & BRCA 2). She serves as a resource for local physicians to explain the science of genetics, and to counsel people on whether or not to have the test.
Previously, patients had to travel to Hospitals further west for genetic testing. According to Smith, the test results generally take approximately three to four weeks with a 99 percent level of accuracy, "This donation helps us to provide the state-of-the-art care and service that everyone deserves right here close to home. We are grateful for their continued support."
The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund's 12th annual Super Saturday raised nearly $3.4 million which supports their mission of early diagnostic treatment programs and research towards the ultimate conquest of ovarian cancer.
