Southampton - The Suffolk County Police Department has begun publishing a newsletter this month. They will send out the newsletter each month, or more frequently should special circumstances dictate. The Police Department will publish the newsletter to keep citizens informed of Department programs and events, as well other matters of public concern.
Highlights
• The Suffolk County Police Department has dramatically expanded its Neighborhood Watch Program. Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs, and brings the community and law enforcement together to solve and deter crimes, making communities safer. For additional information and a free Neighborhood Watch DVD, call 631-852-6983.
• The Suffolk County Police Department offers a Silver Alert Program to assist people who are suffering from cognitive disabilities, such as Alzheimer's and dementia. Upon registering, participants receive a free "Silver Alert I.D. Bracelet," engraved with a registration number as well as the Suffolk County Police Department's telephone number. Critical information regarding the person is entered into a database, and upon locating a missing participant the information is used to return the person home safely. For additonal informatin go to www.suffolkpd.org, clicking on the Silver Alert icon, or call 631-852-6983.
• The Suffolk County Police Department will be conducting a drug disposal event on March 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Operation Medicine Cabinet will provide an opportunity for people to safely and anonymously dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs in pill form. Drop-off containers will be available at every precinct, however, syringes and liquid medications will not be accepted.
• Heroin use has become a serious problem nationwide. Suffolk County recognizes this disturbing trend and as a result has developed a comprehensive 10 point-plan entitled Heroin Education Leads to Prevention, or "HELP," to address the issue of heroin use in Suffolk County. Suffolk County's first HELP forum will be held on April 20 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the auditorium of East Islip High School, 1 Craig B Garrepy Avenue, Islip Terrace. For more information on this forum, or for a copy of Suffolk County's Heroin Education Resource Manual, call 631-852-6530.
• The Suffolk County Police Department is committed to providing the highest level of service to each and every member of the community, and would like to know if you believe you have not received proper service or have not been treated in a manner consistent with their high standards. To accomplish this objective, they ask that for citizen feedback by contacting their website.
For more information on how to subscribe go to www.suffolkcountyny.gov, or call 631-852-6530.

Heroin is more than a problem,The police Department cannot handle this problem the dealers are not afraid to come rite in your driveway or in front of your house,The economy has not effected them driving $50,000 cars and Suv's.Instead of taxing the hell out of New Yorkers for the mistakes of our Govt that has left us broke,They should bring back some old tactics and start Letting law abiding citizens arrest and detain the dealers till a patrol car comes for the scum who are spreading a disease in our country. Then the millions in confiscated money can go back into NY,Have a training program for neighborhood citizens on proper arrest prcedure along with everyone who has a legal NY Pistol carry permit. The Dealers are not afraid they know by the time a patrol car get to your neighborhood they are 3 towns away making another deal killing another Kid so lets take our streets back!
