Southampton - It was business as usual at Southampton Town Hall Tuesday, as Town Supervisor Linda Kabot made her first public appearance since being charged with driving while intoxicated over the holiday weekend. Presiding over a regular meeting of the Town Board Tuesday afternoon, Kabot made no mention of the event, and remained relatively silent on the matter when accosted by reporters after the meeting concluded.

"I am addressing this personal matter with my attorney through the appropriate legal channels," Kabot asserted in a statement released Monday evening. "On the advice of my attorney, there will be no further comment at this time."

Kabot pled not guilty to the DWI charge and is due back in court on Sept. 30.

According to reports released by the Westhampton Beach Police Department, Kabot was making a left-hand turn onto Main Street in Westhampton Beach when she was pulled over by officers Ryan Lucas and Steven McManus for crossing over the double yellow line at approximately 12:25 a.m. Sunday. Upon interview with the supervisor, the officers reported that her eyes were red and glassy and her breath smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage. Kabot is reported to have failed the administered field sobriety tests and refused to submit to a pre-screen breath test. She was transported to police headquarters for processing.

At her arraignment later that day in Westhampton Beach Village Justice Court, Kabot entered a plea of "not guilty" and was ordered to return to court Sept. 30. Her license was suspended for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Back in Town Hall on Tuesday, the only comment Kabot would make at the conclusion of the Board meeting was to tell reporters that she was the only one present in her vehicle at the time she was pulled over.

In addition to holding the top post in the town of Southampton, Supervisor Kabot is also up for re-election in November, running as a candidate on both the Republican and Conservative tickets. It is still too soon to tell what impact this charge will have on her candidacy, though Kabot mentioned in her statement Monday that she will "vigorously defend" herself against the charges in court, as well as defend her credibility as a public official.

"I feel this would be a hard situation for any family to go through," offered Southampton Town Councilwoman Anna Throne-Holst after Tuesday's meeting. Throne-Holst is the Democratic candidate for town supervisor, and will be campaigning against Kabot this Fall. "I hope the community can give her family the privacy and sympathy anyone should be afforded."

Despite the increase in media attention at Town Hall, the meeting went off per standard procedures and there were no public comments made regarding the DWI charge.

If she did the right thing..... she would have called a cab or STOPPED DRINKING! She decided to drink, she decided to get behind the wheel of her motor vehicle, she decided to drive. She made her decisions now has to deal with them. And who was in the car with her??? Thank goodness the police offericers were not afraid to do their job and protect OUR innocent children. PS- the cops in Quogue would have gotten her anyway.

Guest (madd) from everywhere says:
you should not drink and drive period no matter who you are

Guest (secondstone) from East Hampton says:
If Linda Kabot receives the vote of every resident who has ever driven home late at night in a state of inebriation, she will be reelected by an overwhelming majority. While drinking and driving is highly irresponsible it has little to do with her capacity to run the town. If she was an alcoholic, or a habitual offender that might be a different story. She made an error in judgment. EH has shown us all how difficult it is to find competent people willing to work hard for a relatively small wage around here... good luck, Linda Kabot. Don't do it again.

Guest (Lifelong Resident) from Water Mill says:
I've followed Ms Kabot's career since she came into the public eye. But after following her press releases over the budget and Town finances earlier this year it's obvious that she just cannot resist any opportunity to talk to the press, even when her best judgement should tell her not to. Every article on her DWI story has followed "no further comment on the matter" with "in an e-mail exchange later that day" in which Ms Kabot throws out the wildest and most rediculous accusations. She should just let the process take its course and take her licks, and stop blaming everyone else like she seems to do with other matters.

The law is the law. No matter who we are. If you want to have a politcal career, more reason to live by example. Lets not forget all the lives lost due to DWI... Someones child, Mother, Dad etc.

Guest (P) from sh says:
i feel that if you are not guilty why not take the test. its that easy. it would save time and money

Guest (Kelly Carroll) from Southampton says:
On Tuesday, I incorrectly stated that Supervisor Linda Kabot's statement to the press was released on Sunday. It was in fact released Monday evening, and changes have been made in this article to reflect this fact. Thank you to those who correctly pointed this out.

Guest (Concerned Citizen) from Southampton says:
First of all, I commend officers' Lucas and McManus for their not leting off Ms. Kabot because of her "position". Secondly and most importantly, anyone taking the wheel after drinking should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and I hope this will not be an excepyion.

Guest (cop's wife/lawyer daughter) from riverhead says:
Why would Kabot talk? You have the right to remain silent, you have the right to an attorney- if Linda was a good ole boy the cops would have given her a ride home- instead they are trying to ruin her political career and hurt her innocent children because she does the right thing and the cops don't like her-
