Town Announces 2012 Youth Community Service Challenge

Southampton - The Southampton Youth Bureau and Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst are encouraging local community service projects by groups of young people throughout the Township.

Through the Town's Youth Advisory Committee, grants of up to $250 will be awarded to support local youth groups and organizations as they carry out community service projects designed to help their neighborhoods and their neighbors.

"Volunteer service creates an opportunity for young people to interact with and support members of our community they might not otherwise have the chance to work with - seniors and veterans, for example - and to experience a joint sense of purpose and contribution," said Throne-Holst.

"I've seen volunteer work unify young people in a positive way and inspire them to continue working to serve the public." she said. "I am excited to be a part of bringing this important challenge and opportunity, and I look forward to working with those who are eager to step up and be a part of strengthening our community."

Eligible applicants are sponsored youth organizations such as Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, or Junior Firefighters; groups and clubs with adult leadership such as school clubs, faith based youth groups, and community organizations, and informal youth groups with an adult sponsor.

Projects must serve the local community and its residents and be completed by August 31, 2012. Projects must be youth driven - meaning that youth must be an integral part of the project conception, planning, preparation, and implementation. Applications will be accepted from youth groups of all ages.

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 9. A total of $2,250 will be awarded through this grant program. Applications must be submitted by March 9, 2012. Grants will be awarded by April 1, 2012. Applications are available at www.southamptontownny.gov/youthbureau, or by calling 631-702-2417.
