Southampton - Upon the recommendation of the Town Landmarks and Historic Board, the Southampton Town Board approved code amendments on December 22, 2011 that put in place standards that require a demolition permit for all building demolition work. Prior to the new law, applications were handled as building permits while some demolition work took place without any permit,
According to
Nancy Graboski, the sponsor of the resolution, "The Town of Southampton has lost a number of historic structures that are so much a part of the heritage and character. By having a separate application for demolition, not unlike the Villages of Southampton, Sag Harbor and Sagaponack as well as the Town of Brookhaven, proper evaluation and review of structures over 75 years old, will take place before any demolition takes place. And while the recommendation of the LHD Board is only advisory, at the very least the property will have been documented and the owner will be informed about the historic value."
Additionally provisions have been included in the new law such that prior to the issuance of a Demolotion Permit involving a "tear down," the application must be signed by all owners listed on a current Title Certification. Additionally in the event that there is a mortgage on the property, a Mortgage Consent must be submitted. Graboski noted that "These provisions are standard as well in a number our villages and in the Town of Brookhaven, and are not unreasonable."
