Rare Double Rainbow Paints The Hamptons Sky

Somewhere Over the Rainbow may be a pot of gold. (Douglas Harrington)

Southampton - Heads across the Hamptons where lifted to the sky when a rare full rainbow appeared on Friday, October 14, 2011. Rarer still, it was accompanied by a faint, partially complete second rainbow, this meteorological phenomenon is known as a double rainbow.

The pair arrived in the early evening at approximately 5:03 p.m. with the well defined original rainbow making a complete arch across the sky. The second rainbow did not go the distance, but could be faintly defined rising out of the Atlantic along the southern curve of the stronger refraction.

The primary rainbow was visible for over 10 minutes, drawing shopkeepers out of their stores, pedestrians to pause on Jobs Lane and drivers to pull to the side of the road, with many clicking their cell phone cameras to capture the moment. I took these photos with a Cannon EOS 40D. Unfortunately, I did not have a wide angle lens with me to capture the entire arch.

Yes, Mother Nature painted the sky to the delight of all Hamptonites. Hopefully some lucky fishermen in the Atlantic came across a Leprechaun in a rowboat with a pot of gold.
