Sag Harbor - At the Suffolk County Legislature general meeting at the Riverhead County Center, Legislator
Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk) honored
Chris Carney, a remarkable man who has worked tirelessly to support our troops and their families. Seven years ago, Chris, a physical trainer from Amagansett, and a few of his friends visited the
Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. They were so moved by the experience that they met with
John Melia, Founder of the Wounded Warrior Project, to see how they could help. Melia suggested a bicycle ride across the country to raise money and awareness for injured soldiers. Soldier Ride was born.
Carney organized the first Solider Ride in 2004 which raised over $1 million for services and assistance to injured veterans. Legislator Schneiderman invited Carney to the general meeting so he could extend thanks to him and everyone from the Wounded Warrior Project for making such a difference in our American Heroes lives.
Today the Wounded Warrior Project sponsors Soldier Rides throughout the nation raising money to help injured soldiers emotionally and physically. Many of these individuals have joined in on the rides using adaptive cycling equipment. Millions of dollars have been raised through these rides for our wounded soldiers.
Carney also announced at the general meeting the upcoming Solider Rides on the North and South Forks of Long Island:
