Southampton - He has had 27 number one singles, he's sold more than 14 million albums, he is a Grammy winner, he was recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the 100 greatest singers of all time, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he was a father, a husband, and an immortal legend. This December 8, 2010 will mark the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's's untimely murder - a day few can forget. His influence is beyond measure and his impact on music and pop culture has withstood the test of time.

He is admired for his courage, his willingness to take risks, and his peaceful nature. Lennon and Paul McCartney's songwriting partnership is regarded as one of the most influential duos of all time, and shaped the face of Rock and Roll. On that fatal December day, at 10:50 p.m., Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were returning to their New York City apartment, when Mark David Chapman shot Lennon in the back four times.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of his death, CNN's John Roberts will be hosting a documentary titled "Losing Lennon: Countdown To Murder," at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturday, December 4 and Sunday, December 5. The documentary will feature never before seen recordings, interviews and footage from Lennon assassin Chapman.

Hamptons.com's Managing Editor, Eileen Casey, was walking past the Dakota when Lennon was shot and vividly recalls "I was with my sister and we were returning from dinner to her home on Central Park West. It was a very cold night and we were hurrying, but were slowed by the crowds standing outside the main gate. Living in New York City for many years it was not unusual to see fans and tourists gathered outside the Dakota as it is the home to many celebrities. Rather than cross the double wide street in the heavy traffic, we simply stood and waited a few moments until the limo pulled in. As soon as it passed us we proceeded, as did many others, but almost immediately it seemed time stood still as the loud crack of the gunshot was heard - initially we thought a car had backfired. People screaming, confusion, disbelief all occurred in an instant. Having worked on "The Beatles Anthology" for ABC Television many years later it seemed surreal to have been near such a tragic event then, as well as now."

In 1979 I was a single mother of a one year old & trying to make ends meet. I was sitting on a bench in Central Park with my baby, when John & Yoko walked by. John stopped and asked my son's name. I told him Joseph. He stared at me a minute and smiled. He reached into his pocket and said, this is not charity, it is for your son, I can see you need a little help. Please buy whatever your son needs and if you need help with anything else, call this phone number. With that John handed me three $100 bills and a card with a phone number on it. I just stood there, Yoko smiled and they both walked away. John turned around one more time and I said thank you. He said, "no thank yous are needed dear lady". Over thirty years later I have my own company and have donated $100 bills to children's organizations across America. It is something I need to carry on for John. God Bless him always.

I lived near the Dakota on the Upper West Side and remember seeing John one October morning walking on CPW in 1977 who would ever think he would be assassinated there in 1980 and on the feast day of the Immaculate Conception. I landed a job working for the 20 Precinct Manhattan North Detectives that handled his murder. John lives in eternity and in our hearts

Great let us celebrate his murder by further turning his killer in a celebrity! the last thing we need to do is this...that muredere is a non entity to me and should not even be spoken to btw Lennon was not a "peaceful" person even he said "You have to be a bastard to make it, and that's a fact. The Beatles were the biggest bastards on Earth. " he advocated peace but I always saw him as a bit of a rebellious, aggressive person...which is what I like about the man

"He is admired for ... his peaceful nature." LOL He may have advocated, even aspired to peace but his nature was anything but.

Many The Beatles song's are sung as lullabies to my two children at bedtime. My 12 years still requests "Blackbird" when he isn't feeling well. My one year old little girl likes "Yellow Submarine." Of course, my favorite song is "Michelle" which is my christian name. And our family cat is named Sgt Pepper!
