Hamptons.com's Managing Editor,
Eileen Casey, was walking past the Dakota when Lennon was shot and vividly recalls "I was with my sister and we were returning from dinner to her home on Central Park West. It was a very cold night and we were hurrying, but were slowed by the crowds standing outside the main gate. Living in New York City for many years it was not unusual to see fans and tourists gathered outside the Dakota as it is the home to many celebrities. Rather than cross the double wide street in the heavy traffic, we simply stood and waited a few moments until the limo pulled in. As soon as it passed us we proceeded, as did many others, but almost immediately it seemed time stood still as the loud crack of the gunshot was heard - initially we thought a car had backfired. People screaming, confusion, disbelief all occurred in an instant. Having worked on "
The Beatles Anthology" for ABC Television many years later it seemed surreal to have been near such a tragic event then, as well as now."
