Southampton - Southampton Town Police Detective Division reports the arrest of Joshua Johnson, age 24, of Atlanta, GA on Wednesday, March 10 after an investigation involving credit card fraud.
On Wednesday, a local Hampton Bays computer store owner reported to Town Police that a male subject had previously ordered computer equipment in an amount exceeding $4,000. It was later determined by the store that the credit card used by the male was fraudulent.
The owner advised Police that the male was scheduled to pick up the equipment on Wedensday afternoon. After further investigation, Police Detectives confirmed the fraudulent credit card. Police observed the subject returning to the store and taking possession of the equipment. That person was subsequently identified as Johnson.
Johnson was arrested at the scene without incident. Johnson initially identified himself as the person named on the credit card and offered a fictitious North Carolina Driver's License as proof of his identity. Johnson was found in possession of several additional credit cards which Police believe are either fraudulent or stolen. That aspect of the investigation is continuing.
It was additionally revealed that Johnson had a history of buying computer equipment and then subsequently reselling those items "for a steal" on sites such as Craigslist. It was determined that Johnson was in the area visiting with a friend. Police additionally determined that Johnson was acting alone.
As a result of the investigation, Johnson was charged as follows:
• Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree, a Class D Felony
• Two Counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree, a Class D Felony
Johnson is being held at the Town Police Detention Facility for arraignment. The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be filed.
