At the Suffolk County Lacrosse Coaches' 2009 Awards Banquet on June 15, East Hampton lacrosse goalie Mark Simmons added another line to his resume when he was named an Academic All-American.
With the cool but dry conditions - ideal running weather by most accounts - came quick times. Nobody was faster than Ethiopian Ketema Nigusse, who broke away from a pack consisting largely of his countrymen and rolled to his first victory at Shelter Island. 2 comments
Behind a junior fireballer, sound defense and just enough production at the plate, Southampton made history on Monday, knocking off Wheatley 2-1 at Hauppauge High School to capture its first ever Long Island title.
Three weeks ago, a new era in athletics at The Ross School began. After searching far and wide for time on public courts in the community, the Ravens boys tennis team finally was cleared to serve it up at the brand new clay-court tennis facility on the East Hampton campus. Its addition to tennis teams repertoire is just one piece of what's become of a sports revolution of sorts at Ross.
As the top seed in the singles draw at the Division IV boys tennis tournament, Westhampton Beach's top player, Richard Sipala, fully expected to take home top honors. He had gone unbeaten in the League VII regular season, drew the top seed and thus supposedly the easiest path to the championship.
Sipala and Westhampton's top doubles team both made valiant runs on Saturday to reach Monday's semifinal round. However, consecutive losses against seeded teams held the Hurricanes to fourth place in their respective draws, one spot shy of qualifying for the New York State Championships in Flushing later this month.
The rain that swept through the East End early on Saturday put a damper on weekend plans and the numbers of racers who took part in the sixth annual Minds Over Matter 5K in Sag Harbor. However, it couldn't dampen the spirit of the race, a community movement to raise funds for the Gwen L. Kosinski Foundation benefiting brain tumor research.
Hayden Ward started as a bench player, then became a solid starter in the paint, and eventually transformed into one of the best players in Suffolk County. East Hampton hoops star Hayden Ward took his next step in the process when he officially committed to join the SUNY Oswego men's basketball team next winter.
If at the beginning of the season the Hampton Bays softball team was presented with a guarantee to reach the Long Island final even if they ran a good chance of losing, it just might have signed up. The Lady Baymen were relatively young and without a quintet of starters who produced many of the memories from the previous run to the Class B Long Island title.
In a perfect world, in their dreams perhaps, the Pierson baseball team would have kept on playing until there were no more games on the schedule, having won every title there was to win. That quest, which began in the winter, continued through early spring and into June, came to a halt on Monday all too soon. 1 comment
A surfer since he was in second grade, Tyler Maguire wasn't one to waste the sunshine. He'd hoped though that this Memorial Day would be different, that he and the Stevenson men's lacrosse team, ranked No. 1 nearly all season long, would be vying for a Division III national championship.
On Friday, June 19, the Sag Harbor Whalers will host a sunset cruise fundraiser from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cruise leaves from the North Haven Ferry Slip at 6 p.m.
Although the crowd didn't quite meet the expectations of Shinnecock Nation, the excitement surely did. As part of the Celebrity Streetball Tour 2009, the AND1/ESPN Streetball Legends paid a visit to Southampton High's gym last weekend and put on a show filled with acrobatic dunks, nifty ballhandling and, not to be overlooked, competitive basketball. 1 comment
For a day, Shelter Island is taken over by this massive road race, one that began as a local event but has blossomed into an event that's not only charitable but hosts some of the world's most decorated runners.
In just a year, Southampton senior Kyren Miller went from athlete to track athlete. A first year jumper, Miller soared to the county championship at Port Jefferson on June 5 and very nearly broke the school record.
The Southampton baseball team couldn't quite figure how it should feel. It had lost, rarely an acceptable outcome if ever, but in its 6-4 loss to two-time defending Class A champ Islip it had battled and proven that, save for an uncharacteristic careless first inning, it might just be the superior team.
Southampton Town Councilman Chris Nuzzi and Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer came out to support the Westhampton Aviators at a fundraiser .
Bonac, winner of the last two county titles, made a strong bid for a third with a second half of the season unmatched by its rivals. However, in the semifinal round, second-seeded Hauppauge did East Hampton one better. A third-inning RBI single by star catcher Alexis Gonzalez proved to be all the Lady Eagles needed to notch a 1-0 victory, ending East Hampton's season.
When the final whistle sounded on its 13-8 loss at the hands of Half Hollow Hills West, an exhausted East Hampton boys lacrosse team slumped over the sideline. The Bonackers, once ahead by three goals, were dissatisfied with the result, one that could keep them out of the Division II playoffs. The team that was all of 18 players deep and challenged a never-weary army of Colts was flat-out beat.
The Hurricanes aren't about flash or pushing 20 in the goals column. They're a blue-collar squad, apt to outwork their opponents at the very least. With three games remaining on the schedule, they are who they are, and the grind-it-out style is what they'll use to make their final push toward the playoffs.
