Sailing through Gardiner's Bay brings a realization that you are really on the edge of the world. On the west you have your home, the Twin Forks of Long Island. To the east is nothing but the sea - an expanse of waves and sky and clouds that stretch your imagination. You know that Block Island, Newport, and the Cape are out there but the Bay conjures up images of the East End's mythical past.
Year after year, the Old Montauk Athletic Club has honored some of the region's most prolific men and women in sports. This year will be no exception as Cliff Clark, accomplished runner and founder of the Shelter Island 10K, as well as Laura Brown, a force on the East End road race circuit, at the organization's annual awards dinner to be held at Della Femina's in East Hampton on Monday, November 30.
Part wakeboarding, part windsurfing, part paragliding and all fun, if you've been to the beach out here in the past few years, you've most likely seen the kites from a distance looking like brightly colored crescents twisting and diving gracefully through the air attached on the other end to a person cutting through the waves on a wakeboard.
Sullivan and Tompkins are passionate about what they do - sailing and teaching others how to sail. Since its opening in 1997, the outfit has been the headquarters for hundreds of sailing enthusiasts, no matter the experience. 2 comments
Under the broiling sun, these beauties of Ferrari magnificence glimmered, shimmered and were 'all that' - reminding me that I had forgotten to advise the valet not to use the driver side window in my car, as it tends to slip down inside the door. 2 comments Gallery
More than 100 fishermen left Long Wharf for the inaugural Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter Memorial Fishing Tournament, which honored the United States Marine from Sag Harbor who was killed in Iraq. Everyone had their fill of food, beverages and good times at the daylong gala; however, no one lost sight of why they were there in the first place.
Thursday was a fine day for the South Fork squads, two of which looked to remain unbeaten and did so, and two others who looked to even their record. On short rest, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Southampton and Westhampton won big, won by a miniscule margin, but the bottom line was that they won.
They've both gone through the levels upon levels of qualifying races, the travel, and the innumerable hours of training. What Team GO SAIL discovered in Beijing, though, is that once they were on the water, the surroundings weren't unlike the waters they'd trained and raced on leading up to the Olympics.
Could he play again? Agassi loves New York and New York loves Agassi. His homemade DADDY ROCKS necklace, which he wears over his tee-shirt, and his well-documented involvement in several charities suggest otherwise. Hamptons.com sat down with Agassi during Sunday's extravaganza at The Ross School to discuss retired life, parenthood and the growing culture of tennis at the East Hampton institution. Gallery
Montgomery Granger began his tenure in Sag Harbor on Monday. He toured the grounds with Superintendent Dr. John Gratto, looking at ongoing construction and improvement projects as well as fine-tuning a philosophical approach to his job, a full-time position designated as three-fifths athletics and two-fifths facilities director.
For all of her interviews and especially for those with sports legends, her name was on the line. She and other select women - Lesley Visser of television and The Boston Globe, The New York Times' Claire Smith, USA Today's Christine Brennan - laid the foundation for the influx of women in sports media that is seen on cable networks and in newspapers today.
For four years, the Flying Point 10K for Autism Awareness has brought the developmental disorder to the forefront, raising tens of thousands of dollars for those affected by it. Even with the progress that has been made, more must still be done, said race organizer Kim Covell, and the community has joined in to support the cause. 2 comments
Mark Podlas, the Hurricanes' senior center fielder who hit .484 with five home runs and 24 RBI as a junior last spring verbally committed to play baseball at the University of Virginia beginning in the 2010-11 season.
With the amount of work that the Southampton football team and coaching staff puts in on a yearly basis, any season without the playoffs is considered a disappointment. Head Coach Darren Phillips and the Mariners have made their bid but come up short the last three seasons. Considering their talent and depth in 2009, Phillips sees no reason why they should swing and miss again this fall. 1 comment
Hampton Bays' Angel Rojas doesn't shoot for a time or for the win necessarily. He thrives on competition. In the 33rd Annual Great Bonac 10K Foot Race, Rojas received just the push he needed. The 23-year-old added another victory to his lengthy resume, triumphing over hard-charging James Consiglio and a field of 119 en route to capturing first place in the 10-kilometer race. 1 comment
When Southampton's Imani Richardson pulled away from a talented group of runners in the Division 3 100-meter dash, those on hand for the Girls Outdoor Track Division Championships couldn't believe what they were seeing. When Richardson wheeled back to see her time, she too couldn't believe her eyes. 1 comment
If the Bridgehampton boys basketball team came away with anything from Friday's Suffolk County Class D Championship at Longwood High, it came away with a grudge. Memories from the 87-36 loss handed out by Greenport will expire in a year's time when the same two teams are very likely to meet on the very same stage.
A year after its tireless search for an athletic director came to a close, the Sag Harbor School District is back in the same position. Bill Madsen, who was hired as the district's athletic director and supervisor of buildings and grounds last August, resigned from his position earlier this month to become the athletic director at Eastport-South Manor. 1 comment
On Sunday, Ellen's Run changed venues for the first time in its history and fittingly the race ended a matter of yards from Southampton Hospital, where earlier this month the facility named after the race's honoree, the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center, opened up.
It turns out the mob near the mound at the division championships four days ago was merely a dress rehearsal for inarguably the biggest moment in the history of the team and the organization. Alex Pracher, who struck out the side in the ninth inning, was the recipient of body blows from all angles as the Aviators celebrated the '09 title.
