East Hampton - Jeff Thompson, the coach of East Hampton High's first boys swimming team, said during Friday's practice at the Y.M.C.A. East Hampton RECenter that his charges deserved a bit of a rest after having made a splash here in meets with Harborfields and Connetquot. Thus, rather than swim the usual 55 football fields that day, they'd do 45, and there would be no 6 a.m. practice Saturday as is ordinarily the case.
While East Hampton lost both of the aforementioned meets, the Harborfields one, on Jan. 12, went down to the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, and last Thursday's meet with Connetquot, one of League II's leaders, was closer than the visiting team's coach, who used second-string competitors in the first half of it, had expected.
"We snuck up on them in the 200 relay," said Thompson. "After that he used his heavy hitters. . . . It was a helluva show. Connetquot [an 87-75 winner] is a strong team with big numbers, but our boys raced with them."
