With winter around the corner, there are plenty of items being cooked up in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball hot stove. It's time to go around the horn and examine some of the organization's off-season moves, from wholesale renovations at the Westhampton field to the personnel who are in line to make the summer of 2010 a spectacular one.
November 11 marked National Signing Day for athletes across the country, and three Westhampton Beach standouts - Mark Podlas (baseball), Sophia Geraci (softball) and Kelly Dean (girls lacrosse) - wasted little time making their decisions as they all signed to play at Division I programs in the 2010-2011 school year.
This year, SI was a little stronger, Haldane a little weaker, and it presented a prime opportunity to open some eyes. The Suffolk County Class D champs seized that opportunity and the result was arguably the most significant victory in the program's history. Despite a lapse in game three, the Lady Indians controlled the action and when Kelsey McGayhey drove a set to the floor to seal game four, they celebrated a 28-26, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19 victory in the Southeast Regional final. 1 comment
The Lady Bonackers, once down and out trailing two games to none in the Long Island Class A final against Wantagh, were flying high now. With a raucous crowd behind them, they roared back to win 18-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 in a turnaround that was nothing short of spectacular. With the triumphant victory, they were crowned Long Island champs and booked their first trip to the state final four in the program's history. 2 comments
Two teams from East Hampton reached the point that they'd hoped to since the first practice in the pre-season and even before then. The boys soccer squad met a tough match in Comsewogue, the defending state champions, and fell 2-0, but the girls volleyball team made sure Bonac fans weren't entirely disappointed, disposing of Eastport-South Manor to win the Class A county title.
The Lady Baymen had failed in their only previous visit to the county title match in 2004, and first-game jitters surfaced in their return trip against the defending champs. However, the switch flipped early in the second game and HB was on point from then on, posting an impressive 19-25, 25-13, 25-9, 25-16, at St. Joseph's College's John A. Danzi Athletic Center.
Hampton Bays and East Hampton both took to the field in a playoff environment for the first time in a long time, but neither was able to secure the victory. With eight players suspended for the playoffs, HB led at halftime against Mount Sinai before bowing out, while East Hampton's offense couldn't muster much against defending Long Island champion Sayville.
Hampton Bays and East Hampton stamped their tickets to the playoffs with different degrees of emphasis. The Baymen held off Shoreham-Wading River to earn their first home game since 1984; Bonac lost its chance at a home-field advantage with a seven-point home defeat at the hands of Hauppauge.
Entering Friday's Class D championship match against Stony Brook, the Lady Indians had been deemed the queens of Suffolk County for five years running. They have become the team to beat, and it's something that no one this year has done to this point. Shelter Island made it 15 in a row this season and six in a row on the grand scale by knocking off Stony Brook 25-10, 23-25, 25-14, 25-14. 2 comments
In entering the football complex and making one final loop around Hansen Field, McAllister was able to maintain his slight lead over his Westhampton cross country and track teammate down the back stretch. The sophomore registered a time of 16 minutes, 23 seconds, to eke out the win in the third leg of the Hamptons Triple Crown.
With each school year that goes by, we bid adieu to the high school athletes who lit up the East End for one or more seasons for one or more years. This fall, a vast number of them are doing the same on their college campuses, whether it's on the football field, the soccer pitch, or the volleyball court. Here's a look at who's doing what and where.
Bill Reed was in control from the start at the first annual Time For Teens 5K. The Hampton Bays resident and local race regular posted a time of 18 minutes, 6 seconds, which averages out to 5:50 per mile. The inaugural race drew a small crowd of 29 runners and walkers, but it figures only to grow.
Even before the race started, Janelle Kraus was in a celebratory mode. The day was to be grand, no matter how she finished in her hometown race, Saturday's Shelter Island 5K Run/Walk For Breast Cancer. She was back home, she had her best of friends beside her, and after the race was over, they'd all get back together again for her wedding that afternoon. It was quite a day indeed for Kraus and her Shelter Island family.
Hampton Bays and East Hampton are well on their way to the playoffs, thanks in part to key victories this past weekend against Bayport-Blue Point and Deer Park respectively. Also in Division III, Westhampton came from behind in the fourth quarter to move to 3-3 on the year and dramatically increase their own postseason chances.
Behind sophomore quarterback Teague Florio, Southampton stayed in playoff contention with a rout of Mercy. The other three East End teams - East Hampton, Westhampton and Hampton Bays - are in the mix themselves but only after suffering heartbreaking losses in Week 7.
The workout, the after-party, the camaraderie, they're all well and good. They're not why Brian Wolff journeyed from Sound Beach to Montauk on Sunday morning for the sixth annual Serpent's Back Mountain Bike Duathlon. He came to win.
Oz Pearlman, a 27-year-old magician from Manhattan, wore the No. 1 bib as the defending champion of the Hamptons Marathon, and defend his championship he did. Pearlman broke away from the pack early and cruised to victory, posting a time of 2:39:24. He led by four minutes a quarter of the way through, extended it to six at the 13-mile mark and dialed it up to win by better than 12 minutes over second-place Michael Bryson.
Austin Heneveld racked up four touchdowns as East Hampton moved its record to 4-1 with a 35-21 victory over Westhampton on Friday night. On Saturday, Hampton Bays stayed unbeaten by holding off a surging Port Jefferson squad to win 35-21 as well.
Draw up how you'd like to start your work week and this might be what it looks like, exactly how it would go. A day on the links - not too hot, not too cold - a little competition, good company, fine fare, and best of all, at Monday's 2nd Annual Ann Liguori Foundation Charity Golf Classic, all proceeds went toward the American Cancer Society and Healthy Children, Healthy Futures, a wellness program that teaches East End youth about good nutrition and fitness. The future is now for the Hurricanes. Riddled by injuries, Westhampton had to turn to its talented underclassmen in a crucial matchup with Miller Place on Saturday, and the youngsters stepped up to the challenge. Westhampton impressively knocked off the Panthers 24-7 during an action-packed weekend that included romps by Hampton Bays and Southampton, as well as East Hampton being knocked from the unbeaten ranks.
