Sagaponack - Just in time for the harvest season, Suffolk County Executive
Steve Levy will be at Pike's Farmstand in Sagaponack on Thursday to sign legislation that will forever preserve the farmstand and the agricultural land it sits on.
Through a partnership between the county and the town of Southampton, the 7.5-acre Hopping Farm - home to Pike's Farmstand - will have its development rights purchased, preventing it from ever being used for anything other than agriculture, while the current owners of the property will still own the land and turn a profit from the crops they produce.
The Peconic Land Trust is currently in contract with the owners to first purchase the entire property and in turn, as contract vendee, sell off the development rights to the town and county.
Levy will be joined by representatives of both the town of Southampton and the Peconic Land Trust tomorrow as he signs the legislation.
Guest (Jay Schneider) from Sag Harbor says:
What a tremendous victory for the locavores and farmers!
