Bishop Hails Passage Of Unemployment Benefits Extension

Washington - Congressman Tim Bishop voted to extend unemployment benefits for Americans who have lost their jobs and had difficulty finding work in the Bush recession. The legislation extends unemployment insurance (UI) through November 30, 2010 and retroactively restores benefits to people who may have started losing them as early as the end of May - some after just 26 weeks.

After weeks of delay by obstructionist Congressional Republicans, the House voted 272-152 for final passage of the bill. The President is expected to sign this crucial lifeline into law as quickly as possible.

"Relief for Americans who have lost their job through no fault of their own injects much-needed cash into local economies," said Congressman Bishop, noting that a recent study by Moody's Analytics found that every dollar spent by the government on benefits for the unemployed produces an overall return of $1.61 for the economy. "The recession is an economic emergency and Americans struggling to find work deserve help as we recover."

On July 1, the House passed the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act under simple majority rules, 270-153. Senate Republicans filibustered the bill, demanding that the $34 billion cost of emergency relief for jobless Americans be offset in the budget. The Senate approved an amended extension Wednesday, sending it back to the House for today's vote. Nearly 2.5 million Americans had lost their benefits before the extension was approved.

In recent weeks, Republican leaders have embraced a permanent extension of the Bush tax cuts that disproportionately benefit wealthy Americans without offsetting the cost, adding trillions to the deficit over 10 years. "Claiming it's fiscally responsible to hold up unemployment extension while supporting a new round of tax cuts for the wealthy is playing politics with the needs of the American people," Bishop said.

"Have you lost your job yet? Keep buying foreign made!" It's poetic and a bumpersticker I saw this weekend. Think before you vote. If you elect someone into office that has never had to struggle, do not expect them to have your best interest in mind when they get into office. But also keep in mind, even if you do manage to pick the right person with the right motives for the job, they will have a major fight on their hands. This is not a new game. This is the same old game with just a few new players with new ideas or old ideas that got left behind after election day. On the other hand, do not be surprised when a candidate tell you what they want to accomplish and fight for it.

To CO and Templar, Check your facts before you spout off. The Stimulus is not all spent but already allocated to projects. They just didn't hand out the money. You hade to have a proposal and prove it will put people to work. You guys would have bitched if it all went out at once. By the way Mo and Jo, the GOP saying they wanted to pay for it. That was bull. All their leaders said the unemployed were lazy or sitting around waiting for that $300.00 check. If that is the case why are they filibusting the job bill that is completely paid for and is for small companies and the middle class. They just want people to think Obama doesn't care. Pay more attention and quit watching FOX News.

I love how it says "obstructionist republicans" are the ones to blame when we know damn well the democrats have majorities in both houses. We also know republicans did not oppose the extension, just how to pay for it but the tyrannical thugs who currently hold power don't want to think about that. Meanwhile, 4oo billion in unspent Obama stimulus money just sits there when it could have been used to pay for this extension quite some time ago. Obama's "Change we can believe in" is just so much "More of the same"; lies that just enough people fell for and now look at what we are stuck with until 2012.

I am not so sure this is just a politics and head in the sand issue. The Repubs got a bad rap for wanting to use our already available funds from the stimulus (still sitting in reserve) rather than take out a new loan to pay these benes... so it was just about WHERE the money was coming from, not whether or not we needed it.

Please cut/paste to other blogs. Dear Americans, I just want you to know what the Bush Tax Cuts means to the Average Americans. For Anyone who makes less than $30 an hour, it means you got back around $40- $120 a year on taxes, but to multi- millionaires and billionaires, it mean millions and millions of dollars that would have improved your community. It means money that should have gone to the schools of your children, giving your kids a better education, better food at school, and more extra curricular activities. That money would also means better Jr Colleges and state universities; and LOWER Tuitions. American Middleclasss should have been outraged at the Bush Tax Cuts because it deprives the entire middle class of any chances of getting ahead. Rich people doesn't need these benefits as much since they sent their children to private schools and boarding schools.

To everyone that is on unemployment and is responding to these blogs. I just contacted my unemployment agency and ask what do I do now that the president has signed the extension. They said it won’t go into affect for at least 2 to 4 weeks. So that is more time families go without because the GOP wanted to play politics with our lives. So we can sit in front of our computers and complain. That might make you feel a little better to let off some steam but the Senators that are blocking the extension benefit bill are not reading these blogs. They don’t care. What we can do is take action. Start calling every Senator that blocked this bill for two months. Most of these guys that opposed the bill are millionaires, so you can see why they don’t care. To find your Senators contact info go to Senate.gov. Once you get their DC office number and fax number blast their phones with calls everyday. Some of them are saying unemployment benefits is just an incentive to not look for work and have even said we were lazy. So call and call and call. To anyone that believes we are sitting on our butts and not looking; let me tell you what is going on. Two major things. 1) When companies were forced to lay off workers their goals didn’t change they were still in business to make a profit and if they had share holders they still had their yearly projection that was promised to the share holders. So what they did is just made the people they kept work harder and longer. Maybe had some people that were in management get back to physical work instead of just supervising. So if they hit their goals with less workers there is no incentive to rehire until their goals are too high their current work staff can’t reach it. So less labor and hitting quarterly goals creates larger profits. 2) I been in management most of my life and wither you are a manager of a small business or a big enough business that you have a Human Resource manager. Hiring can be very stressful. They are looking for a person that will be right for the company and stay and help the company succeed for a long time. So when they are looking at applications and interviewing people they have those criteria’s in mind plus they have a pay scale in mind. So they are not going to hire someone that was making $90,000.00 for a $45,000.00 a year job . Why? It is not just because they might be over qualified; it is will this person stay with us for the long term? or until a better paying job comes up. Yes, during the interview most applicants will say they are looking for anything right now and will be a loyal employee. The interviewer knows that as soon as that person gets called back to their old job or is offered a higher paying job they will leave 99.9% of the time. So part of there job of hiring is to find a person for the job that will stay and keep turn over down. That means be very careful who you hire because every person you hire cost a company around $3,000.00 to $5,000.00 in training. ½ of that amount on the new hire and the other half for the person spending time training the new hire, plus the hours of paperwork done when there is a new hire. So every time you lose that hired person the company takes a loss. By the way high turnover is #1 on the list of losing your job as a manager or HR manager. This doesn’t stop us from looking but just shows the reasons why we are not getting call backs from resumes or applications. It is just the facts, a SUBWAY owner isn’t going to hire a person that was making $50,000.00 a year and train them when they can hire a person that has worked in that field or prior work history pay scale is close to what he is offering. He just can’t waste time with turnover. Lets not forget the 99ers – Also don’t forget who caused the delay in the extensions vote them out!

Thank God is right! So happy for those that didn't get up to Tier 4, but what happen to Tier 5, all of us (millions) that have exhausted all our benefits! Do we starve, and live on the street?

The republicans have their heads in the sand. Giving tax cuts to those that don't need it and sentencing people that need help to poverty. Yeah they should be very proud of them big bad selves alright! This country will look like Afghanistan in a few years. More people on the streets policed by people who don't care and the rich in their ivory towers. Wake up Americans! We have brain dead people running this country. Do you really think they hear us? What a dirty joke!
