"Great Greening Of Southampton" Continues With Weekend Events
Southampton – The Sustainable Southampton "Green" Committee has coordinated October's "Great Greening of Southampton" series of events addressing recycling, gardening, conservation, alternative energy, transportation, and other "going green" ideas for homes and businesses. Several schools are also participating with assemblies and class projects.
According to Green Committee Education Chair Dorothy Reilly, "Our first annual 'Great Greening' has exceeded our expectations at every level. So many interest groups, schools and countless individuals have taken this opportunity to focus on caring for our climate and our community. With all that divides us, it's been very exciting to see us come together in working toward the 'greening' of our wonderful town."
Marcia Bystryn, President of The New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV), will present the League's "Blueprint for the East End" on October 23 at the Water Mill Center at 7 p.m. The public is invited to listen and participate as Sustainable Southampton's Scott Carlin moderates a community dialogue with Bystryn on strategies and solutions. The Blueprint presents the League's 2009 - 2010 policy agenda for Long Island's East End. Please RSVP at watermillcenter.org/events/blueprint.
A host of events throughout the Town are planned for Saturday, October 24, which coincides with the international Global Climate Awareness Day. These include the dedication of the Kurt Billing Memorial Trailhead at the Tuckahoe Preserve, a bike/car tour of local organic gardens led by the group Spokespeople with world-class cyclist Margaret Logan, several trail hikes and more.
Other informational events and discussion groups are scheduled to continue into November.
