East Hampton - The 78th annual Fisherman's Fair is on Saturday, August 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and promises to be, as always, a delight for children, gourmands, shoppers and art lovers alike. It fills the grounds at Ashawagh Hall and the Springs Library which you'll find at 780 Springs Fireplace Road in Springs (that's the village four miles northeast of Nick & Toni's). It's the event of the season for folks and fisherpersons who really want to have fun.
For the kids there'll be pony rides and games galore. For the kids in all of us the blacksmith shop will be open and taking us back to horseshoe days. The food will run from clam chowder from heaven to hot dogs by the hundreds. The selection of plants and flowers promises to be the best ever. And there are fine crafts by artists from here and from afar of every kind for sale. The 43nd Annual Springs Invitational art show will be starting its second week and hopefully a few beauties will be left unsold. But if not there will be an exceptional selection of signed and numbered posters from previous years for sale and other limited editions, as well. You'll find signed posters by Elaine deKooning, Pearle Fine, Miriam Shapiro, Bill King, John Opper, Herman Cherry,
Ibram Lassaw, John Little, Clause Hoie, Constantine Nivola, Ilya Bolotowsky, John Brooks, Arnold Hoffman, Robert Richenberg and
Ray Parker. And limited edition posters by
Willem de Kooning,
Lee Krasner,
Jackson Pollack and many others. You can become a Springs artists collector in just one day. The prices are more than reasonable and they all look great on the wall.
The Fisherman's Fair brings East Hampton to life every August come rain or shine. And just down the road you'll find the Pollack Krasner House and kind of around the corner the legendary Green River Cemetery. It's also the 101st Anniversary of the Springs Improvement Society which has brought the artists and craftsmen of the Springs together for more than a century.
