Ross Students Sew Quilts With A Heart

Heart Of The Hamptons
The fifth graders in 5A and 5B made a quilt for the American Heart Association's Heart of the Hamptons fundraising event, which will be held this summer. The theme of the quilt is love and having heart. In art teacher Melissa Joseph's class, students agreed upon and designed different heart patterns by cutting fabric and laying it out. It was sewn together by Joseph's mom and the students added the finishing touches by sewing small x's and o's into it by hand, which symbolize hugs and kisses.

The Memory Project
Ross high school students Shu Wu, Faith Humbles, Gabriella Vera-Abassi and Wu Qing Hipsch created portraits of children living in the Philippines as part of The Memory Project in their painting elective. The organization has American students paint portraits of children living in orphanages around the world and sends them as gifts. The paintings were on display in front of the Ross Café in the Center For Well-Being on June 9 and June 10. Ross School has participated in this project for the last three years. Along with the portraits, the student artists send a photo of themselves and notes to the children. They receive a photo of the child holding their portraits, sometimes also with a note or drawing.

Middle School Spring Concert
Friends, family and Ross faculty and staff filled the Great Hall in the Center For Well-Being to listen to the Middle School Spring Concert on June 3. The evening started with the string orchestra, instructed by Clarissa Schneider. The concert band was next, with instruction by Maureen Isbister. Following intermission, Adam Judd, Performing Arts chair, instructed his treble chorus to sing a number of songs, and the finale featured a joint performance by the concert band two and string orchestra two, which performed "The Simpsons" theme song.

Athletics
As the school year comes to a close, the Ross athletic teams celebrated another successful season in sports. A Middle School Sports Ice Cream Social was held on June 9 where all team members were recognized for their hard work, gamesmanship and overall improvement. The high school sports awards were also held recently. Numerous awards were presented for Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player in soccer, golf, volleyball, tennis, basketball, cheerleading, track, lacrosse, baseball and softball. Evelyn Hoffman and Jonathan Dratel received the senior athlete awards. Garrett Cutler received an Excellence in Coaching award.

Agricultural Program
Family Farm Insurance, a partner with the Long Island Farm Bureau, bestowed a check for $600 to Ross Lower School to be used for its agricultural program. The monies will be used to buy another bed for the garden and mulch. Jim Agals, the resident agent for Family Farm Insurance, received an award for $300 from the LI Farm Bureau for maintaining clients, and in turn, he matched that amount and donated it to Ross School. Currently, the Ross garden has four beds, but Director of Lower School Elka Rifkin hopes to have class reps work on fundraising next year so that the School can double the number next year. In addition, the Lower School will implement a brand new lunch program in the Fall. With this in mind, "We will compost our lunch waste into the garden next year," said Rifkin.
