Spectrum
Exploring the theme of color and light, this year's seventh grade exhibition project, "Spectrum," featured an array of bright and beautiful works of art. An opening reception was held at the Ross School Gallery on Friday, May 22. The show features the work of six East End artists - Monica Banks, David Collins, Mary Heilmann, Sheila Isham, Cynthia Knott and Frank Wimberley. "Spectrum" was organized, designed and installed by the seventh grade. Thematic student-curated shows featuring the work of professional artists of the region have been a tradition at Ross School for the past 15 years. For this year's show, the students visited the artists' studios, videotaped interviews, took pictures and chose works of art to borrow. Later, they took painting and printmaking workshops with some of the artists, creating their own pieces to contribute to the exhibition. "Spectrum" is open to the public and will remain on view through June 24.
Music Award
Ross School 10th grader
Shanna Polley was selected to receive a 2009 Elizabeth Brockman Music Award, based on her original piano composition work at the Playhouse Project's Fifth Annual Master Class on May 21 and May 22. On Saturday, June 13, Shanna will receive a $1,000 check as part of the awards presentation at the Playhouse Project's Benefit Award Concert. There she will also perform her piece, "Movements." This is the second year Ross School has been involved in this Master Class project. The performances varied from choral and trombone to cellos, violins, viola and a string quartet.
Imagine Me And You
Exploring the mind's eye, the second grade at Ross School performed "Imagine Me and You" for the entire Lower School on May 21. The play examines the world of imagination and was inspired by the poetry of the actors themselves. Studying poetry with their teachers Diane Biondo and Kristin Eberstadt, the second grade was asked to write poems that fell under three overall themes: big feelings, objects and nature. Over 100 poems were written by the students and compiled by their teachers.
Learning Off-Campus
Applying a hands-on approach to learning, teachers at Ross Lower School are taking their classrooms off-campus. The Pre-Kindergarten class took part in a beach clean-up in Amagansett and collected sea specimens on May 22. The trip was in correlation with their studies on mollusks and shells. They collected moon shells, blue mussel shells and slipper shells as well as rocks and driftwood, which will be used for an on-going sculpture project. Meanwhile, the first grade visited the
LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton to study patterns, both natural and man-made. In cultural history, the students are observing patterns in the natural world discovering how man has duplicated nature's patterns in man-made objects.
