'South Pacific' A Success At The Ross School

Ross School boarding student Daniel Shin and day students Adam Philips and Cole Katzter were given a special opportunity to meet Tiger Woods in Las Vegas, NV on May 15 and 16. A generous donor provided the School with free passes to the Tiger Jam Event. As members of the Ross School golf team, the three students were selected to meet the golf pro, as well as play at a golf clinic and see a performance by the world-famous band No Doubt. South Pacific
According to staff at the Ross School the school's spring musical, ,South Pacific, was a huge success. Featuring students in grades seven through 12, the production is said to have recaptured the magic of the box office hit. The stage was transformed into a paradise island, with bamboo sculptures, thatched roofs and a silhouette of one large palm tree as the backdrop. The lead roles are played by Devon Leaver as Ensign Nellie Forbush, Lorcan Jowers as Emile DeBeque, Lucas Merat as Lt. Joseph Cable, Julian Mardoyan Smyth as Luther Billis, Sylvia Channing as Bloody Mary, Charles Lehner as Captain George Brackett and Noah Engel as Commander William Harbison.

Poetry Week
The eighth grade celebrated poetry week recently, hanging poems written on fabric, on the Nike green outside the high school. Known as poetry flags, they were inspired by the visuals of Tibetan prayer flags and part of a project integrating English and art. The students read a wide range of poetry, from the Sufi master Rumi, to the venerable Robert Frost, whose poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" was studied. The hanging poems feature original prose by the students as well as works by famous poets.

Studies Of Spain
The eighth grade Spanish classes joined forces with the Ross Café to get a flavor of Spain as part of their studies on Barcelona. On Wednesday May 13, two Spanish classes sampled an array of tapas prepared by Chef Liz Dobbs. The students tried a Spanish tortilla, made from potatoes and eggs; chorizo, a spicy cured and aged Spanish sausage; tiny empanadas with meat and raisins; and thinly sliced carrots with red onion and parsley served as a palette cleanser. Chef Dobbs also made flan, a traditional Spanish custard, with orange flavoring.
