Ross School Spring Concert

2009 High School Spring Concert
Ross School will present its 2009 High School Spring Concert on Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m.

The concert will feature musical performances by the school's jazz band, chorus and chamber ensemble, as well as ballet, jazz and world dance performances. The evening will conclude with a Jamaican dance solo accompanied by the African drumming ensemble. The concert will take place in the Court Theater, located in the lower level of the Center for Well-Being. Admission is free.

The jazz band will perform Hal McKusick's sparkling arrangements of jazz standards, including songs by Thelonius Monk and Rodgers and Hart. McKusick will direct the 12-member band and play alto saxophone.

The chorus, directed by Adam Judd, will present pieces representing French, Chinese and American cultural idioms, including Samuel Barber's beloved setting of the James Agee poem "Sure on this Shining Night."

The chamber ensemble, led by Maureen Isbister and Clarissa Schneider, will offer works by Handel and Schubert and join the chorus in performing a Galician-Portuguese villancico.

Dance performances will feature a comparative study of praise dances, including Sufi whirling and American Gospel revival, as well as a ballet solo from Pugni's Esmerelda, after the choreography of Jules Perrot. Sheryl Hastalis is the creator and guiding influence for the dances to be presented.
