Art As A Family Legacy: Christopher And Lucia Haile Exhibited

Lucia Phillips Haile's masterful watercolors and drawings of the human figure will be presented by The Sag Harbor Historical Society beginning July 5th at the Annie Cooper Boyd House.

Sag Harbor - Two concurrent posthumous shows of mother and son, Lucia and Christopher Haile, artists and long-time Sag Harbor residents, begins this week. A retrospective of Christopher Phillips Haile's work - "Reverse Angle" is showing at Sylvester & Co., 103 Main Street, Sag Harbor, through July 27. Lucia Phillips Haile's masterful watercolors and drawings of the human figure will be presented by The Sag Harbor Historical Society beginning July 5 at the Annie Cooper Boyd House, 172 Main Street. A gallery reception will be held on July 11 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m..

An art educator and artist, Lucia Haile was a self-described lifetime student of art, finding new challenges in seeing and rendering the figure. A fixture in local drawing groups, her passion and enthusiasm for making art was contagious and inspiring.

Just a short walk away at 101 Main Street at Sylvester & Co., an installation of art works by prolific artist Christopher Phillips Haile, Lucia's son, has been curated by his brothers Roger and Duncan Haile. The exhibit entitled "Reverse Angle" is an introduction to a large body of work created by this gifted and idiosyncratic artist. The works displayed are from a recently published portfolio of giclee prints of paintings, monotypes, etchings, and drawings that span his more than 35 years of making art.

In a 1994 art review art critic Rose Slivka observed, "Sometimes things happen when and where you least expect and restore your faith in the miracle of surprise - Chris Haile works out of spiritual force and imaginative drive. Each of these paintings, drawings, monotypes and sculptures holds a vision. Lucia Haile's watercolor and pencil drawings are grounded in all the energies and traditions of life drawing with a presence of Cezanne, Matisse and those wonderful watercolor and life-studies by Rodin."
