Southampton - Stony Brook Southampton will open several of its Earthstock 2009 events to the public. In its eighth year with Stony Brook University, the week of activity hopes to inspire green thinking and awareness.

Saturday, April 18
Boat Rides Around the Bay & Family Fun, 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., Marine Station. Take an hour boat ride around Shinnecock Bay. Children eight and older can ride in the boat, but must wear a life jacket. Not up for boating? Make a take-home aquarium! Boats can seat 35 people. Parking available on campus, in Lot A.
Sunday, April 19
First Annual Martin Schoonen 5K Run/Walk, Registration: 8 a.m., Fine Arts parking lot. Proceeds benefit the Martin Schoonen Scholarship Fund, to be awarded to a SBS student. Fees: For high school/college students: $15, or $10 in advance. For non-students: $25, or $20 in advance. The race begins at 9 a.m. Advanced registration forms are available on stonybrook.edu/southampton. The first 150 registrants receive a commemorative Stony Brook Southampton tee-shirt.
Tuesday, April 21
Sustainability Speaker Series presents Scott Chaskey, 7:30 p.m., Duke Lecture Hall, in a talk titled "Equanimity: An Organic Approach." The leader of the local Quail Hill Farm will share thoughts and observations concerning caring for land and building community, and address the concept of sustainability. In a culture that is often dominated by special interests, Chaskey will advocate that we can move, with a will to change, toward a better planet and become better as a people.
