Horse And Rider Saddle Up For A Noon Visit To Main Street

An unusual mode of transportation was seen in Southampton Village this week. "Benny" and his rider proceeded south on Main Street. Photos by Aaron Boyd

"Benny" and rider properly crossed Main Street using the crosswalk.

Southampton - An unusual site greeted folks on Main Street in Southampton Village on Monday, Oct. 20 - a beautiful quarterhorse named "Benny" obeyed most traffic and pedestrian laws while transporting his rider to lunch at Barristers.

Benny looked both ways before crossing Main Street within the designated crosswalk and he properly relinquished the right of way to other modes of transportation (automobiles) and more than adhered to speeding regulations. However, he did maintain his gait and onlookers agreed he did his part to reduce fuel consumption.

The rider was reluctant to give his name and later indicated he resides in Southampton. After Benny crossed Main Street, he meandered away well within Village speed limits south down Main Street. One could almost imagine Benny offering up a "Just passing through, little lady - just passing through" as an explanation for his unexpected appearance.

A lovely and refreshing sight after the mostly rude and non-law abiding drivers of the past summer. How cool it would be to see more of such fuel saving measures in our lovely village. Oh- for the days of old, when we actually did ride our ponies to town..
