Poetry Slam
The sixth graders are practicing for a Poetry Slam. Each class practices writing raps before they travel to the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Teacher Sue Ellen O'Connor will assist each class in writing and perform their three-minute slams. Here's a sample of a rap from Andrew Silipo: "I stand in front of you with no care in the world. When you hear this great rhyme, your head will twirl. I got the stunning looks and the super style. Just sit and listen to my rap for a while. Look at me, I'm the head of the class,
I'm so fast, you'll never last."
Family Bingo Night
The final PARP activity was Family Bingo Night. Families were invited to play bingo in the gymnasium. The bingo winner picked one of the prizes on the stage. There were about 300 parents and children attending the activities. Prizes included Lincoln Logs, walky talkies, the board game Trouble, and a choclate fountain. Teachers Jodie Hallman and Nancy McMullen hosted the evening and turned the bingo wheel.
Yellow Dyno Presentation
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in presentations by Yellow Dyno, to illustrate how to be safe in the streets and throughout the community. The Yellow Dyno showed the children a lot of mini-clips and what tricks suspicious people try to use on unsuspecting children. One useful tip was for student to keep at least three or more steps back from a stranger in case you have to run. This helped students to know who may be suspicious and to always be safe and make the right choices.
Goose Eggs
Don't count your geese before they hatch. That is the motto of Robert Walker's seventh grade science class. Neighbor and Springs alumni Charlie Marder recently donated goose eggs. The class put them in an incubator and are waiting for them to hatch. There are lots of unanswered questions in the student's minds -- will they be boy or girl geese; big or little?
Spring School World's Fair
The Springs School World's Fair will be held in the gymnasium on Friday, May 9. Fifth grade teacher Christine Cleary and fellow committee members are looking for volunteers to help them organize this multicultural event. Dances, performances, traditional food, traditional music, and foreign regalia is encouraged. The fair is open to the public.
PTA Pasta Dinner
The Springs PTA held a pasta dinner on Sunday, March 16. Joe Realmuto, the chef and manager of the Town Line Bar-B-Que Restaurant, made a tasty pasta dish at the Springs Fire Department.
African-American Biographies
Sixth graders in Ray Wojtusiak's class have written biographies about African-Americans that have had an impact on American History. Including individuals such as
Malcolm X and Barrack Obama, The students have to write a five-paragraph essay on their chosen person.
Courtyard Crew
The Courtyard Crew is assembling to begin planting, weeding and rebuilding the courtyard. They are eager to get their hands dirty. The students will work with Sue Ellen O'Connor during their lunch and recess. They need a big stump for the new sun dial. The teachers say that they love to use the courtyard for student reading, performances and the annual kindergarten clothesline art show. Kirsten Clarke from Tracey Frazier's fifth grade class agreed. "I love it when my teacher brings my class to the courtyard, I get to sit on the bridge and read and smell the flowers all around me." Last week they watched a hawk hunt and capture its food for the day, while the students sat in their classrooms.
Knitting Hats
Approximately 30 students have been given the gift of a warm head by ex-staff member Janet Wood. To while away the gray days of winter, Mrs. Wood has been knitting hats and has donated them to the school for children who could use a real homemade hat. One of the kindergarten students took a small hat for his brand new baby brother.
Community Service
Students continue to perform community service at the Senior Center on Springs Fireplace Road. This week students Joe Chinchilla, Abby McCann, Dana Cucci and Leland Muller will participate.
Suffolk County Music Festival
The four students that participated in the Suffolk County Music Festival concert practiced for 14 hours over three days with fellow student musicians throughout the county. Sage Gibbons chimmed in on trumpet and Annie Schuppe played clarinet participating in the Division 1 band. Participating in the Division II chorus were Dana Cucci and
Yori Johnson.
