Terrific Teachers Tenured in Hampton Bays
Ten educators in the Hampton Bays School District were recommended for tenure by Superintendent of Schools Joanne Loewenthal in accordance with Chapter 1 of the Board of Regents of New York State Education Law at the June 17th Board of Education meeting. The students' quality experiences in the classroom and development of success are a direct result of the hard work and dedication put forth by the staff at the schools.

It is with great pleasure that the Hampton Bays School District congratulates these fine teachers: Elementary School: Patricia Biscardi, Liliana Cacace, Kathleen Dayton, Michelle Ferguson, Janine Gasser; Middle School: Saverio Naclerio; High School: Kim Clareen, Porfirio Lopez, Mary Ann Sharpe, and Rodney Way.

Junior Thomas Pandolfo

Student Earns RPI Medal Award
Hampton Bays High School junior Thomas Pandolfo was recently presented with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Medal. In order to be recognized with this honor, a student must excel in science and mathematics. Tommy's high scores and great interest in these areas led the faculty and staff at Hampton Bays to recommend him for this distinction.

Should Tommy choose to enroll at Rensselaer, he will receive a $15,000 per year merit scholarship, which is guaranteed for his four years at the school.

Juniors Awarded for Excellence
Hampton Bays was proud to announce and recognize four of their outstanding juniors for receiving several awards from the University of Rochester. The University honors high-achieving juniors with the opportunity to earn four distinctions that can ultimately represent scholarship money if they attend the university. Each award is worth $7,500 per year for four years. Schools can nominate only one junior per category.

Cindy Klager was named the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award winner for demonstrating commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social situations, leadership and dedication to community action, and having strong grades and a rigorous course load in the humanities and social sciences.

Hampton Bays High School juniors Thomas Pandolfo, Brittany Tedesco,
Jessica Stellman, and Cindy Klager all received University of Rochester
Awards that will ultimately earn each student scholarship money should they
attend the university after high school.

The Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology was given to Thomas Pandolfo. This distinction is bestowed upon a student with a strong interest in innovation and/or information technology and a high level of achievement in this area. The student must look for exposure to new technologies outside of school, and lead other students in new approaches to old problems.

Jessica Stellman was honored with the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award that recognizes high achievement and rigor in science, and high PSAT and/or SAT scores in mathematics. Bausch and Lomb was founded in Rochester and is a global eye care company.

The George Eastman Young Leaders Award was presented to Brittany Tedesco for showing leadership in the school and community, achieving high grades and undertaking challenging courses, and for extensive involvement in extracurricular activities.

Hampton Bays students Meghan Harris (5th grade) and Samantha Barrett
(8th grade) worked together to complete information about constellations,
as both their classes met to gain a better understanding of the night sky.

Star Gazing in Hampton Bays
Hampton Bays eighth-grade students in Toni Dossiano's class recently met with Lucy Dabrowski's fifth-grade class for a lesson in constellations. Students spent a portion of their school day working together to complete a series of worksheets and games to better understand the night sky. The classes utilized SMARTBoards, dittos, and games to enhance their knowledge about various constellations names, both their Greek and common names, the season and direction they appear in, and the major star in the cluster that is easiest to pinpoint.

Hampton Bays Students Shows Leadership in Albany
Hampton Bays senior Sindy Daun attended the 18th Annual Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute in Albany this past spring.

Senior Sindy Daun

The program is an effort that includes the New York State Bilingual Education Technical Assistance Center (BETAC) and the New York State Senate. The objective of the conference is to foster leadership skills in Hispanic and Latino students, and to provide them with knowledge of how the legislative process works. The students take part in leadership activities, a mock assembly session in legislative chambers, and visit with local assembly people.

The institute was founded for former assemblyman Angela del Toro, who passed away at a young age while serving his term. Del Toro's colleagues wanted to preserve his beliefs by creating this program.

Sindy, who has shown herself to be a leader in the Hampton Bays school community, will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall to begin her work on a Pre-Med degree.

Hampton Bays May and June Students of the Month
