Chess NYC is returning to the Hamptons again this year with its “Chess on the Beach” program, but has expanded to two one-week camps. Chess NYC has also relocated the camp program to Georgica Restaurant in Amagansett, however the “Thinking Chess Thursday” program continues at Guild Hall.
According to the Chess NYC mission statement, “Chess NYC’s philosophy in chess instruction is to emphasize sport and fun and provide as much chess instruction as a child can bear, but not more! In doing so and providing supervised, spirited play, each student associates Chess with fun.”
“Chess on the Beach” is a full day program that starts with a 9:00 a.m. drop-off and 4:00 p.m. pick-up at Georgica. Along with chess instruction and activities, there is open and supervised sports play time, Grand Master coaching and lunch is provided for all students. The July camp, which ran from July 21 – July 25, was completely full, but there is still time to register your future Bobby (or Roberta) Fisher in the August camp which will run August 18-22. Chess NYC also offers a half day morning and half day afternoon program, along with single day drop-offs based on space availability. (We understand these are rarely available, so it is best to commit to the full week program, either half or full day.)
“Thinking Chess Thursday” classes remain located at Guild Hall and run from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. through August 28. Not a bad option for Mom and Dad to grab an early Thursday adult dinner at The Palm or the 1770 House.
Chess NYC has a great reputation with programs in over three dozen locations in NYC. Chess will improve your child’s cognitive thinking skills, teach them patience and an appreciation of strategic critical thinking. Fun and fascinating, once learned and appreciated, a passion for chess lasts a lifetime. Get that passion started in your child this summer at Chess NYC’s “Chess on the Beach” and give yourself a week on the beach without worrying about them in the undertow.
