East Hampton - The Ellen Hermanson Foundation has provided $283,800 in year-end grants to recipients including Southampton Hospital and Ellen's Well. Known for its annual Ellen's Run fundraising race in Southampton, the foundation focuses on early detection of breast cancer, especially for medically underserved communities; psychosocial support for patients, survivors and families on the East End of Long Island; and improving pain management.

Foundation Chair, Julie Ratner, explains, "We are thrilled to announce these grants because they will provide a direct benefit to Southampton Hospital's Ellen Hermanson Breast Center and breast cancer survivors. I am especially pleased that we have always kept the money raised through Ellen's Run in the community. I'd like to thank all our friends and supporters who made this possible and invite them to join us for the 16th Annual Ellen's Run on August 21, 2011."

These grants not only complete the fulfillment of the foundation's earlier commitment to Southampton Hospital to help fund the 2009 construction of its new Ellen Hermanson Breast Center, but also support the Hospital's genetic counseling program and the purchase of a state-of-the-art elastography ultrasound machine. Elastography is a new diagnostic imaging modality which uses ultrasound to assess tissue differences in stiffness, or elasticity. It provides an imaging representation of what was historically assessed qualitatively by physical examination. Elastography improves diagnostic confidence and increases specificity of the ultrasound exam.

Robert S. Chaloner, Southampton Hospital President and CEO comments, "We are grateful to The Ellen Hermanson Foundation for its continuing generosity and commitment to exceptional breast healthcare. Our long partnership with the Foundation has enabled the creation of the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center with its diagnostic excellence, state-of-the-art treatment and compassionate support for patients. We are very fortunate to have a facility of this caliber on the East End of Long Island."

Other grants will fund the psychosocial support services of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, as well as much-needed programs under the umbrella of Ellen's Well that are administered by the Southampton Hospital Foundation.

The Ellen Hermanson Foundation was established in 1997 to honor the memory of Ellen Hermanson, an activist and an advocate who channeled her journalistic talents to become a forceful voice for breast cancer patients and their families, and died in 1995 at age 42. The Foundation, which has given away more than $2 million, is unique in its commitment to helping breast cancer patients and survivors on Long Island's East End cope with the changing nature of the physical and emotional aspects of breast cancer. Ellen's Run, the Foundation's annual fundraising race, attracts more than 1,000 participants each year.
