Southampton - Children, adults and four-footed friends all strutted their stuff in both Southampton and Sag Harbor in celebration of Halloween and the annual Rag-A-Muffin parade in each community. Treats were on the mind and tricks were pondered by dozens of ghoulish, ghastly and ghostly parade marchers!

The Southampton Chamber of Commerce made information available on their website for attendees at the "Annual Rag-A-Muffin Parade and Pumpkin Trail" which was opened to children ages nine and under, and this year the costume judging took place at Lake Agawam Park prior to the parade. Gathering at 10 a.m. the parade march began at the Park from Windmill Lane to Nugent Street to Main Street and down Jobs Lane returning to the Park. On Friday, a costume parade was also held on Main Street in Southampton. On both days treats were available for eager hands from many local businesses.

Additionally, free photos were available through Southampton Village Photo & Graphics where 'props' were made possible by Pumpkintown at Hank's Farm, and prizes donated by local merchants were awarded for best costumes.

Four-footed friends also donned a costume and walked the walk.

The parade in Sag Harbor began at 12 noon on Saturday, where marchers gathered at the Windmill and proceeded up Main Street, ending at a gathering at the grounds of the Custom House. The Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce also made sure this annual event was a great deal of fun for all, and local businesses had treats available for all marchers. Parade participants were lucky that there were no tricks with the weather, and a warm, beautiful fall day greeted everyone who turned out for the festivities.

Each year both of these communities, as well as others across the East End, donate time, effort and energy to ensure that the respective parades are a great deal of fun for all ages and participants, and local businesses are to be commended for making sure that treat bags were filled to overflowing.

As local businesses did ensure that there were plenty of treats available, as well as a great variety to choose from, some adults were observed 'lifting' a few treats of their own favorites, and slipping them in pockets to be enjoyed later - perhaps while watching some scary movies - however, the time honored tradition of exchanging treats among friends was happily on display as well, after all - this is serious business.

Employees and representatives of many of the businesses joined in the fun as well and dressed for the occasion in costume to the delight of the marchers and viewers. Sidewalks were crowded with community members who simply enjoyed watching and there was much finger pointing and oohs and aahs.

Superman, Spiderman, The Mario Brothers, witches, pumpkins, cowboys, princesses, ghosts, goblins, ladybugs, butterflies, Batman, Cat Girl, Cat Woman, just cats, lions, plus numerous others all walked the walk for treats.

Creative costumes, including many recognizable favorites - and some not so easy to identify but clever nonetheless - made for a colorful showing gracing the Main Streets of both of these communities, and the goodwill and enjoyment of all was evident everywhere.
