Successful Saturday Puts Time For Teens 5K In Motion

Southampton - Bill Reed was in control from the start at the first annual Time For Teens 5K. The Hampton Bays resident and local race regular posted a time of 18 minutes, 6 seconds, which averages out to 5:50 per mile. Not until about two-and-a-half minutes later did Reed have company at the finish line.

Selden's Kevin Kumerle completed the 3.1 mile course in 20:32. Ruben Pinillos of Southampton finished third in 21:30, Hampton Bays' Noel Kelly took fourth in 21:48, and Westhampton Beach's Rob Smith was fifth in 22:32.

The inaugural race drew a small crowd of 29 runners and walkers, but it figures only to grow. Major sponsors included TD Bank, IGHL, Timothy Hill Children's Ranch, MacLachlan & Eagan LLP, Dorothy Lichtenstein and Rand and Jessie Araskog. Those on hand at the race included 10 teenagers who have attended bereavement camps.

Time For Teens, a not-for-profit organization, was founded by Laraine Gordon, who has worked as a clinical social worker in Southampton for the last 15 years. This August, TFT held a bereavement camp for children ranging from ages 12 to 19. Twenty teens, all of whom suffered the loss of a loved one, assembled at Timothy Hill Children's Ranch, a Riverhead not-for-profit that has hosted grieving teens since 1980. At the retreat, attendees took part in group therapy with professional licensed therapists, participated in therapeutic psychodrama techniques, and also activities that includes kayaking, swimming, yoga and other athletic endeavors. In October, Time For Teens has set up a retreat for the teens and/or their guardians at Timothy Hill's 96-acre lakefront camp in the Berkshire Mountains.
