Solutions Inspired By Nature

Southampton - Scientific advancements have uncovered pest control solutions, derived from nature, that are safer and more environmentally friendly than ever before.

Most people think of energy conservation and water conservation when they think of 'green living.' The definition however actually goes far beyond that. As in most aspects of our lives, in landscaping and pest control, you can implement eco-friendly, 'green living,' alternatives.

Natural Solutions Include:

 • Microbial Pesticides. Bacteria, fungi and other organisms have been discovered that can effectively control pests on trees, shrubs and lawn.

 • Insecticidal Soaps. The combination of natural products like vegetable oils mixed with alkaline substance such as potassium hydroxide have proven effective against aphids, thrips, scale crawlers, spider mites and other soft bodied pests.

 • Botanical Solutions. Plants have also been found to provide effective pest-control solutions. It seems so obvious - plants naturally produce chemicals that defend them from attack by various pests. Some plants in particular are especially rich in organic compounds that can be extracted and used for insect control.

 • Horticultural Oils. Certain oils, diluted with water and applied as sprays, can effectively control many insect species. These are typically highly refined petroleum oils that are combined with an emulsifying agent; plant-derived oils may also be combined. These are safe, effective and have limited effects on beneficial insects.
There are other options as well. Solutions like hot pepper powder and alcohol are among those tried and proven effective at controlling insect infestation.

It's important to remember that good bugs, as well as bad, can be affected by some of these methods so it's a good idea to consult an arborist, lawn care or plant health care specialist to make sure that their use won't harm your landscape goals.
