Riverhead - The crisp autumn days when school is back in session is the perfect time to let the fresh air in. Fall sports and after-school activities keep many people outdoors but there's no reason why families shouldn't still breathe in fresh, clean air indoors.
Here are some tips:
• Remove Clutter: Tidying will get rid of unwanted particles and prevents new ones from settling.
• Get Organized: Assemble cleaning tools before you start. Buy a good mop, toilet brush, cleansers, cleaning cloths, and vacuum cleaner. Keep trash bags at hand.
• Pick Up Some Necessary Items At The Store: Purchase a divided plastic tray to carry four necessary cleaning products - glass or multi-surface cleaner, heavy-duty degreaser, powdered abrasive cleaner, tile cleaner.
• Streamline Your Movements Like 'Karate Kid': Wax on. Wax off. Move around each room once and use both hands to clean.
• Control Mold: A cause of many common health problems. Wipe down shower curtain liners regularly, avoid using rugs in floors below ground level, and/or install a dehumidification system.
• Seize Dust, Dirt And Pollen: Use clean terry and lint-free towels for dusting. Install a HEPA filtration system to filter air and capture these particles several times each day.
• Get Moving: As you dust, move furniture to the center of the room to vacuum behind it. Extension cords also help when you move from room to room.
• Don't Use Just Any Vacuum: Use one with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter to prevent tiny particles of dust from being blown back out into the air.
• Touch Every Single Thing In Your House: Clean from the top down in one direction - from ceiling to floor and top floor to the basement, moving left to right, through each room. Don't forget to dust/vacuum ceiling fans, windowsills, vents, furniture, etc.
• It's time To Change: Replace air filters to prevent unsafe and inefficient dirt and allergen buildup.

If you're installing a HEPA filtration system, be sure to check its MERV rating. The higher the rating, the better it is at capturing dust and pollens and preventing them from entering the home. http://www.ultimateair.com/blog/bid/57454/What-is-a-MERV-Rating
