Southampton - A space to relax is a space to love. Take a second and wrap your head around a concept that will change the way you unwind, de-stress and enjoy a slice of the day in bliss, by yourself, that is.
Interior designer and author,
Elaine Griffin just made life at home that much better. Whether you're a wife, a mother, a homemaker, a student or a cave dweller, every woman needs a space to call her own. "HomeGoods, (an off-priced retailer that sells designer merchandise), and I worked together to create the 'Mom Cave'. It's a new space for a new time. Women are always on call, whether or not you're a mom or you're a wife, you're always on duty taking care of someone," Griffin remarked. "Women nurture, that's what we do. Anytime you're anywhere in your house you're still on call."

There's just a few simple things that can be used to embellish the space that focuses on what makes you happy. Bright color schemes, memorabilia and knick-knacks are some of the things that can enhance the space. Griffin suggests that using bright colors such as mustard yellow, (which is a big color for spring), or fuchsia can cheer the mood of the room. Deciding where to create your space is plain and simple - an extra closet, a den or even half of a room can be easily transformed.
Griffin recommends figuring out what you want to do with the space; whether it's scrap booking, painting or blogging, keep it personal so you can work on things that lift your spirit. "Even with 'Mom Caves' we never make enough time for ourselves. Make sure you invest in the time. Don't put yourself last on your duty list," says Griffin. "Men have always had their spaces in the home. You want to walk in and feel good the minute you sit down." Adding momentos like pictures of loved ones, wall décor and fun, throw pillows will also add your sense of style to the space. Last but not least, a comfortable place for you to sit will add the finishing touch to your new room.
The "Mom Cave" design came in response to a recent poll conducted by HomeGoods. The poll targeted 1,000 women showing that more than 50 percent of them said they did not have a room to call their own. Three quarters of the women in that percentile mentioned they would love to have a space of their own.

The low budget, hip and trendy idea is perfect - especially during the economic hardship that a majority of working women are feeling today. "The 'Mom Cave' is the space where the women who nurture everyone go to nurture themselves. It's where you go to recharge your soul at the end of the day," exclaimed Griffin. "With the recession we're hungering down and re-examining our values and staying close to the home. Home is the center of the universe."
Making a space for yourself to share with friends and enjoy doing the things you love the most is just as important as taking care of those around you. Regardless of how much you would like to spend, any woman can claim a space she loves. Griffin points out that we are living in the 21st century and many women go from living in their parents home, to being roommates, to post-college living and they still have never made a space for themselves to cherish.
"It's not about how much you spend, it's about making you happy, it doesn't have to be a big room. If you don't have an extra room, literally all you need is three feet or even a closet," Griffin adds. "I live in Manhattan so I've taken advantage of small spaces. HomeGoods and I wanted every woman to carve out a space of the house for themselves, no matter what size or budget."
This is just the beginning. As women across the country catch on to this new concept, sooner than later every woman will have a "Mom Cave" of her own. It doesn't take a professional to turn a small space into gem.
