Going Your Way On Your Wedding Day

Southampton - A recent article in The New York Times showcased some really off-the-wall modes of transportation for newlywed couples. For example, one couple exchanged vows and then took off in an ice cream truck that the father-of-the-bride surprised the couple with - they distributed the sweet treats before heading to the wedding reception. Another arrived to the reception on an elephant.

These point to an ongoing trend in wedding planning: couples are putting their own unique stamp on their wedding, often forgoing traditional elements of the special day. And if you are looking for wedding transportation that doesn't include the standard limousines, you are in luck. There are tons of unusual ways to leave the ceremony and make a grand entrance at the reception. Equally, you can be just as creative when the party's over and you are taking off for the honeymoon.

So how do you come up with a transportation idea that makes a statement? First, consider your wedding theme. If it's traditional and formal, you may want a romantic Cinderella-style horse-drawn carriage to whisk you off after the ceremony. Imagine the ensuing photos! Also think about what makes you a unique couple - so if you are both environmentally conscious, perhaps you want to utilize a golf cart or go-cart (decorated, of course!) or bike your way out of the reception on a bicycle-built-for-two.

Sports-loving couples who enjoy the outdoors have a plethora of interesting options, as well. If you're having a beach wedding, think about a boat whisking you off into the sunset at the conclusion of the reception. Or, space allowing for take-off and landing, make a grand entrance at a vineyard wedding in a hot air balloon. Some couples have even been known to fly off in a helicopter or arrive on a biplane.

Of course, these are extremes. A simple way to replace the standard limousine with something a little bit different includes renting a sporty convertible or a vintage convertible. Maybe a Jeep is more your style. And on Long Island, it's easy to rent an old-fashioned trolley, not only for the newlyweds, but to transport you and the entire bridal party to the reception when the ceremony has concluded.

Once you have come up with a great mode of transportation, you have to make certain that the rental company you are using is reputable. The internet is a handy tool for this, and don't hesitate to check wedding boards and forums, to see if any recent brides have had positive experiences with the firm. Then visit the rental company in person.

Ask to see a standard contract, so there are no surprises. Every single aspect of your rental should be outlined clearly. Inquire about the company's cancellation policy and refunds. And be certain that the contract stipulates the exact vehicle(s) you are renting. For instance, if you are booking a yellow Hummer, the contract needs to state that specific color. When reviewing the contract, don't succumb to pressure; take your time and read it thoroughly, asking as many questions as you need.

Finally, if you are taking the time to research and book a really creative form of wedding transportation, don't forget to inform your wedding photographer and videographer way in advance, so they can prepare to capture your exciting comings and goings!
