Topping Off The Cake

They look real, but these lovely purple gerbera daisies and lavender and white roses from It Tops the Cake are made of silk. (ITTC)

Handmade entirely with paper by Concarta, this adorable couple is definitely a conversation piece. (etsy.com)

Southampton - Back in the "old" days, it was the norm for wedding cakes to be crowned with run-of-the-mill ceramic or plastic bride and groom figurines posing stiffly and somewhat spiritless atop plain, white icing. But just as wedding cakes no longer conform to traditional round layers and can be ordered in myriad shapes and colors, cake toppers are now available in a great variety of styles, themes and materials. That's because the name of the game for today's brides is personalization.

What better way to personalize than with your own initials? One of the most popular trends in cake toppers nowadays is monograms. The couple's initials, scored in acrylic, glass or metal (silver or gold), can be adorned with Swarovski crystals or embellished with rhinestones for a razzle-dazzle effect. The font can be customized to coordinate with the wedding reception theme, as well. For instance, sleek and streamlined letters would complement a modern, contemporary wedding. A more elaborate, ornate script would work well with a romance-themed reception. But if monograms aren't your thing, consider your first names, or an entire word, such as "love" or "eternity."

Couples who are hobby enthusiasts have a slew of whimsical options these days for the finishing touch on the cake. Are you baseball fans? Golfers? Tennis players? Let your guests know by adding a special cake topper featuring your favorite activities. Often you can mix and match individual figurines, so even if he's a football fanatic and you love to fish, you can order a set that reflects each of your individual preferences.

One unique way to get guests "oohing" and "aahing" over the cake is by capping it with paper creations. Paper bride and groom cutouts can add a charming touch to an otherwise plain cake, but these days, creative couples can order virtually any type of paper adornment on the internet - consider paper doves or iconic landmarks, such as the Eifel Tower or the Empire State Building.

Finally, you can add a completely new look to a simple wedding cake by topping if off with a lush cluster of flowers. If fresh seasonal flowers aren't your style, ask your baker to create sugar flowers. Another good option is silk flowers, which can either be carefully stored after the wedding, or displayed in your new home as husband and wife, a constant reminder of your special celebration.
