East Hampton - What better way to celebrate summer - and get noticed while doing it - than to tastefully show a bit of skin? Designers got scissor happy this season and slashed snipped and cut up their collections to allow us to show off our best assets. And with the numerous iterations of these pieces we can be as edgy or refined as we choose.

Herve Legers spring collection makes its way down the runway. |
The cut out tanks, leggings, jeans, and skirts show minimal skin but give the eye something to play with - or if you are looking for a more conservative approach, designers offer an array of cut out jackets, bags, and shoes.
The most ubiquitous article of clothing adhering to the trend is the cocktail dress.
Michael Kors maintained his conventional silhouettes but strategically exposed some skin to create a graphically sexy look, while Versace, Balmain, and Alice and Olivia were a bit edgier with shorter and tighter versions of the dress showing methodical peeks of skin. But perhaps the most daring would be Herve Leger. While we all appreciate the Herve Leger bandage dress for the instant illusion of sucked in and lifted up it creates, there is a bold sexiness inherent in the cut out version.
Whether you splurge on the Versace wool tank dress or decide to slash one of your old shirts, be sure to keep the exposed skin relegated to one part of the body. And make sure it's a part of your body you are really confident with! Sorry to be so brusque, but this is not the time to decide that, although you despise your stomach, you are going to wear a dress exposing the entire side of it. Or you haven't worn a two-piece in 10 years but that sliver of material down the front of the monokini makes it technically a one-piece. Here's an opportunity to ask, "What part of my body am I loving these days?" And then show it off.
If you feel a bit self-conscious, opt for a blazer that has slits but also has a lining, or layer a cut up tank with another tank underneath. Like every trend, it should be worn in a way to make you feel confident and beautiful - and for this one in particular, sexy and a bit edgy. So here are some pieces that may do just that, and a few are on sale (which makes sense since they are missing fabric)!
