Southampton - The new issue of
Egoiste has arrived, and Rizzoli Bookstore is the exclusive storefront distributor here in the U.S.
The first new issue of the celebrated French style journal to be produced in five years, this issue - the 16th in 30 years - is comprised of two substantial volumes shrink-wrapped together ($50, 248 pages in total). The highly stylized cover photographs of each volume embody
Egoiste's unique and enduring aesthetic and reflect the superb design and content of its pages.
Keira Knightly flanked by two massive wolf hounds graces the cover of Volume 1, and Volume 2 features writer, director, and actor
James Thiérrée - the grandson of
Charlie Chaplin and great-grandson of playwright
Eugene O'Neil.
With a page on facebook,
Egoiste has dipped a little toe into the digital age. But that remains pretty much the only change that
Egoiste creator
Nicole Wisniak has made with this newest issue. Much that made the magazine stand out when it debuted in 1977 remains the same and has, if anything, improved over the years, down to the fine paper on which it is printed.
Egoiste is still the labor of love of Nisniak, who serves as editor, advertising director, production editor, and distributor, and who art directs the exclusive ad spreads/photo essays that appear in the magazine for such brands as Dior,
Louis Vuitton, Baccarat, and Chanel.
Showcased throughout both volumes of issue 16 are
Egoiste's signature edgy black-and-white photography and celebrity profiles on Knightly, Thiérrée,
Roman Polanski,
Tom Stoppard, and others, essays on the arts, and much more. At a time when print magazine publishing is in flux,
Egoiste, with its superb production values, has achieved icon status as a physical object to be cherished, with early issues fetching as much as $1,000 on eBay in Europe.
