Some Choices To Help Attack The Fat!

Like restarting a computer, the Juicy Naam cleanse alters body chemistry thus helping to overcome food addictions. (Giuliana Torres)

Southampton - Now that our New Year's resolutions have gone the way of summer frocks, it's time to take some serious action to find the thinner, healthier you inside all that winter padding.

The Juicy Naam
Located at 51 Division Street, Sag Harbor, 631-725-3030, www.thejuicynaam.com.

Several years ago Wall Street trader Giuliana Torre traded in her material girl life to devote herself to healthful living and launched a juice bar at a East Hampton farm stand (open in the summers) and a Sag Harbor shop (open year round). Her mission is to help her clients to not only detox but also to reset their metabolisms and palates through the Juicy Naam Cleanse ($150 per day; winter special two for one), a customized program compiled from the best practices of the countless cleanses she herself has undertaken. The cleanse alters body chemistry thus helping to overcome food addictions (Goodbye muffins!) and start over with a clean slate - without cravings. As in a European spa, her cleanse is juice-based (but can include food), and incorporates body treatments to facilitate transformation including Naam yoga, colonics, ionic foot baths, salt baths, and Harmonyum Healing.

Before going on the cleanse an evaluation is key. "Cleansing is not for everyone," she says. She then works up a program - from three days to 30 days - to fit individual needs. Everyone starts with a "pre-cleanse," a sort of practice session to get you in shape: no dairy, wheat, caffeine, protein, alcohol; plenty of green vegetables, beans, seaweed, wild fish. The cleanse itself is comprised of organic super foods, herbs, juices, smoothies, raw food and vegetarian fare. With any cleanse, Giuliana says, there will be detox symptoms - from headaches to skin breakouts - as toxins leave the body. "We're normally in our sympathetic nervous system," she says. "Fight or flight. Cleansing puts you into your parasympathetic system: rest and digest. It's meditative." Though a cleanse implies a certain amount of deprivation, Giuliana's aims to make it a pleasant experience. "I do not believe in suffering, so I make sure that the cleanse is nurturing and luxurious," she says.

Detox your fat away in bliss at Gurney's Inn. (Gurney's)

Gurney's Inn Resort Spa
Located at 290 Old Montauk Highway, Montauk, 631-668-1892, www.gurneysinn.com.

Thalassotherapy is a centuries old cleansing procedure that incorporates the benefits of seawater and seaweed. Built in the European tradition, Gurney's spa has the distinction of being the only true Thalasso Center in the continental United States. "By helping to eliminate a lot of the toxins which we're exposed to every day, thalassotherapy is an ideal addition to any body detox program," says spa director Candice Monte. Treatments range from simply swimming in Gurney's famous heated seawater pool to being deliciously pummeled with jets of ocean water. There are also many luxurious marine-based spa treatments. Seaweed Wraps - seaweed gel is wrapped around the body with sheets and warmed with heat lamps - are so dense with minerals and bio-active trace elements that they aid in detoxing, boosting the circulation, and stimulating the metabolism (Marine Kur Therapy $220). For powerful lymphatic stimulation, a vigorous body dry brushing is followed by a seawater hydro-massage while you're ensconced deep in a Thalasso tub - (Ultimate Detox Therapy $285). More dramatic is the invigorating Thermalism Sea Plunge ($20 per person) wherein three 10-minute intervals of Steam Bath alternate with one-minute cold Swiss Showers followed by a plunge into the healing sea. The change from hot to cold stimulates circulation, increases metabolism, enhances the detox effect, and scares the beejezsus out of you! Not recommended for people with heart disease.

The Endermologie machine at La Carezza looks like an alien.

La Carezza Salon Day Spa
Located at 43-45 Windmill Lane, Southampton, 631-283-7683, www.lacarezza.com.

The bad news: 90 percent of women have cellulite. The good news: Endermologie. Esthetician Angelina Daraio points to a large machine in the spa room that looks vaguely like an alien. "It cost more than my car," she says. First developed to reduce scar tissue in burn victims, it was soon discovered that the machine breaks up the fat cells that cause cellulite. After having you put on a "body stocking," she starts zapping you with the arm of the alien. A vacuum sucks your flesh into a chamber where rollers are able to pummel below the surface to the connective tissue where fat cells reside. Once imploded, the fat is directed into the lymphatic system which eventually eliminates it from the body. Angelina guides the wand as it rolls and sucks all areas where cellulite lurks: from saddle bags to tummy. The treatment is painless, but every once in a while the suction needs to be reduced for sensitive areas. All in all, Endermologie reduces body circumference, increases skin tone and promotes body contouring. But one treatment won't suffice. It takes two a week for five weeks, then a maintenance program (Series of 10 - $1,215). "Endermologie is for the woman who takes care of herself but can't get rid of that orange peel skin," says Angelina.

Cosmetic surgeon Stephen Greenberg uses non-invasive and slightly invasive techniques to zap fat.

Stephen Greenberg, MD
Located at Glisten Medi-Spa, 5720 Route 25A, Wading River, 516-364-4200, www.greenbergcosmeticsurgery.com.

Dr Greenberg, with offices in Manhattan and Woodbury, and a medical spa called Glisten in Riverhead, offers three fat-busting treatments which can be taken individually, or for serious fat busters, combined into one package called ThinSmart. The ThinSmart package, which offers significant savings over individual treatments, is customized for each individual's needs. Zerona™ ($3,000 for six treatments) literally melts fat away with a low-level "cold" laser, and is so painless you can catch up on your emails while undergoing the 40-minute treatment. The laser disrupts the membrane of fat cells allowing the fat to be released into the body's system. Greenberg prescribes niacin to help the elimination process. On average, with regular treatments (six in two weeks), patients lose nearly four inches from the circumference of waist, hip and thighs.

Next in his arsenal is VelaShape™ ($3,000 for six treatments). Using radiofrequency and infrared light, the procedure offers Body reshaping through "circumference reduction," mainly on thighs, buttocks, love handles and abdomen. Vacuum and specially designed rollers smooth out the skin to facilitate heat delivery, shrinking the size of fat cells. A more targeted approach is Smartlipo™ ($3,500 - $8,000), the first laser-assisted liposuction procedure. Unlike liposuction, there is no need for general anesthesia. However, as it's minimally invasive, a local is required. A very small cannula containing a laser fiber is inserted into the skin and moved back and forth causing fat cells to rupture. The resulting oily liquid is removed through a tiny incision in the skin. Good riddance!
