Four Great Value Reds

Here at PJ Wine, offering you Extraordinary Wines at Exceptional Prices is our mission, so when we find great values we snap them up. Close communications with our suppliers is one source for these finds and our annual trip to Bordeaux is another. Below are four excellent values resulting from these efforts. The first wine comes from a tip one of our suppliers gave us. It is the Comalats Cabernet Sauvignon from Costers del Segre, a relatively unknown region in Spain. The other three are affordable Bordeaux that we found during our trips to Bordeaux in 2003 and 2004. All are priced for everyday consumption and include standout bottles from the fresh and more classic 2002 vintage and the powerfully ripe 2003 vintage. The high quality of these wines, coupled with their budget-friendly price tags, makes them perfect choices for everyday meals and case purchase—so that your cellar is stocked for winter.

Costers del Segre, Spain

2003 Comalats Costers del Segre Cabernet Sauvignon (Net) $9.97
Our sales representative from a large distributor showed us this wine because he knows we always have our antennae up for great values from Spain. It is difficult for Spanish Cabernets to crack the American market, especially when from little known areas. Luckily, we were able to take advantage of new, more aggressive pricing. It normally sells for two to three times our price. After tasting the 2002 vintage we brought in all they had left and it sold out in two weeks. We have just received delivery of the 2003 vintage and it is even better. As we tasted it, our team exhibited the special quiet that always precedes an exchange of smiles, approving glances and comments of "mmmm!" and "that's good." With herbs, minerals and spiced red cherry and plum fruit aromas and flavors on the palate, this Cabernet Sauvignon has excellent acidity and a long finish. This Spanish red is a tremendous value, especially by the case.

Bordeaux, France

2002 Château d'Armailhac Pauillac (Net) $21.97
PJ Wine owner Peter Yi recalls that this wine was clearly one of ten standouts of the 2002 vintage that drew the attention of the PJ's team during their trip to Bordeaux to explore the vintage. With wild flower, mineral, herbs and dark berry aromas, the wine shows beautifully juicy, ripe plum and blackberry on the palate and a linear acidity that both helps the extremely long finish and bodes well for aging. Because the nose is a little reticent at first we suggest you decant to fully enjoy this classy wine now. It is a lot of quality Bordeaux for the price and a strong candidate for case purchase. 2003 Château Le Pin Beausoleil Bordeaux Supérieur (Net) $19.97
We have been following this small gem of an estate for years and have always been impressed by their wines and their commitment to quality. Stephane Derenoncourt, whose company now consults for scores of highly regarded Bordeaux estates as well as for projects in Spain and other countries is the estate's consulting enologist. "Medium red. Black cherry aroma. Silky and harmonious in the mouth, with a fresh cherry flavor. The substantial tannins arrive late, giving the fruit a chance to blossom nicely." —IWC 87-90, PJ 90+

2003 Rollan de By Médoc (Net) $16.97
"...exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with fat, fleshy fruit flavors, good delineation, soft tannin, low acidity, and a long, heady finish." —WA 88-90, PJ 89
