There's nothing better than a nice hot drink after a long cold day. But seriously, how many cups of the same old coffee or hot chocolate can one person drink? In an effort to break free from the rut here are a few deliciously warm suggestions.

Hor peach cobbler will satisfy your sweet tooth and warm you to your toes. |
For the kids, instead of hot chocolate try hot strawberry milk. The same rules apply - take rich whole milk, add strawberry syrup found at any grocery store, and microwave with a straw for two and a half minutes. (The straw keeps the hot liquid from bubbling over). A little whipped cream or a few marshmallows will top it off just right.
Now for the grown-ups, starting low octane, as in no alcohol, a hot peach cobbler will satisfy your sweet tooth and warm you to your toes. Heat a cup of apple cider and add two ounces of non-alcoholic peach schnapps and a pinch of cinnamon. Stir with a cinnamon stick and enjoy.
Peach not your cup of tea? Try a cup of lemon spice tea. Bring two cups of water, a tablespoon of honey, two lemon slices, and two cinnamon sticks to a boil, either in the microwave or on the stove. Add two tea bags, cover, and steep for about five minutes. To serve, remove teabags, lemon, and cinnamon. Garnish with lemon for an extra kick if desired.
Hot wassail is not just for the holidays, the mix of fruit juices is just sweet enough to make you almost enjoy the snow and ice. Combine four cups of apple juice, three cups of pineapple juice, two cups of cranberry juice, one-quarter teaspoon of ground nutmeg, a cinnamon stick, three whole cloves, and six lemon slices in a large saucepan and bring to a slow boil for 10 minutes. Serve hot and steaming.

Austrian Chocolate Cup tastes as decadent as it sounds. |
For the hot cocoa die-hard, mix it up with an Austrian Chocolate Cup for a drink that tastes as decadent as it sounds. Combine 30 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate (broken into small bits), the finely grated peel of one medium-sized orange, two and a half teaspoons of cinnamon, and three tablespoons of milk in a large saucepan and heat gently, until the chocolate melts, stirring frequently. Add 15 cups of milk and heat until piping hot. It is important to keep stirring so the milk doesn't get a skin at the top or burn at the bottom of the pan. Strain into a coffee or teapot to serve, pour into mugs, and top with whipped cream and grated chocolate. A cinnamon stick makes a great stirrer for this one.
Now for the stronger stuff starting with a Boston Caribbean coffee. Dip the rim of a mug in lime juice and then again in sugar to coat. Mix one ounce each of dark rum and cream de cacao with six ounces of your favorite hot coffee. Top with whipped cream and cinnamon. A cinnamon stick here again serves as the perfect stirrer.
Since we're in wine country, mulled red wine is just the ticket. Pick up a bottle of your favorite red wine and combine one tablespoon of sugar with the juice of half a lemon, a dash of bitters, a half teaspoon of both cinnamon and nutmeg, and five ounces of red wine. Bring to a boil and serve in a ceramic mug so you can wrap your hands around the vessel for a bit of extra warmth.

You can't talk about hot winter drinks without mentioning a classic Hot Toddy. |
In Scandinavia, Grog is a popular way to break the ice. Heat two ounces of cinnamon vodka, six ounces of apple cider, four whole cloves, and the peel of one orange in a saucepan, but do not boil. Strain and pour into a mug, garnish with a cinnamon stick.
You can't talk about hot winter drinks without mentioning a classic Hot Toddy. Urban legend says that a strong Hot Toddy can cure the common cold, fever, a sore throat, and even a hangover, but medical science hasn't proved or disproved any of that.
Bring six ounces of water to a boil and pour into your favorite mug, add a teabag and a clove and steep for at least five minutes. Add a large tablespoon of honey and two ounces of whisky, brandy, or rum and stir to melt the honey. Squeeze in the juice of a lemon wedge and an orange wedge. Before you take that first long sip, be sure to breathe in the aroma for a bit to break up any congestion.
